A phone thermal camera estimates surface temperature from infrared radiation; it does not read temperature exactly as a contact thermometer would. A questionable result often comes from the target material, reflected heat, distance, focus, framing, or a mismatched setting—not a failed camera. Check those factors first, and treat the thermal image’s colors separately from its numeric temperature reading.
First, check what the temperature reading is measuring
Before changing settings, confirm that the spot meter or measurement region is actually over the surface you intend to measure. A reading taken from a tiny feature, an edge, or a background area may not represent the target. Frame the object so the measurement area covers enough of it to avoid nearby surfaces influencing the result. There is no universal minimum target size for every phone thermal camera; use the guidance for your specific model.
Also distinguish the numeric measurement from the image’s colors. A palette maps temperatures to colors, while an image scale determines how those colors are distributed across the scene. Changing either can make the same scene look dramatically different without, by itself, changing the temperature measurement.

Check the surface material and reflected heat
Emissivity can make surfaces read differently
Emissivity describes how effectively a surface emits infrared radiation. FLIR’s FLIR ONE Pro User Guide says spot-meter accuracy depends on distance, ambient temperature, and the emissivity of the observed material. Its default “matte” setting is a reasonable approximation for many materials, but it should not be assumed correct for every surface.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: Infrared camera plugs directly into phone charging port and connects with iphones with USB-C (iphone 15 and newer)
- SUPER RESOLUTION: Vivid IR technology upscales the image to 240x180 from 80x60 for greater detail and clarity. Flir MSX technology merges thermal and visual images to enhance details in real time.

- ACCURACY: Measures temperature within ±3°C or ±5% when the unit is within 15 °C – 35 °C and the scene is within 5 °C – 120 °C
- JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last
Glossy and reflective materials—particularly metals—are poor emitters. Their apparent temperature can be influenced by infrared radiation reflected from nearby objects, so the camera may show an estimate that differs from the surface’s actual temperature. If your camera offers an emissivity setting, choose one appropriate for the material rather than relying automatically on the default.
Reflections matter more when emissivity is low
Reflected temperature is a setting used to account for radiation from the surroundings that bounces off the measured object. FLIR’s technical guidance on reflected temperature explains this compensation and notes that it is especially relevant for low-emissivity surfaces. A metal surface may reflect heat from a person, a heater, a window, or another nearby object, affecting the camera’s apparent reading.

FLIR lists general starting values for cases where the operator is unsure: emissivity 0.95, reflected temperature 20°C, relative humidity 50%, atmospheric temperature 20°C, and distance 1 m. These are generic recommendations in FLIR documentation, not universal values for every material, scene, or phone camera. Use the settings available on your model and seek material-specific guidance when accuracy matters.

Check distance and ambient conditions
Distance and ambient temperature affect FLIR ONE Pro spot readings. FLIR’s technical documentation also describes object distance, atmospheric temperature, and humidity parameters; atmospheric conditions matter more over longer distances. Follow your camera’s own instructions for these settings, since controls and available adjustments differ between models.

Keep the phone at a consistent, sensible distance and avoid comparing readings taken under substantially different ambient conditions as though distance and surroundings were identical. A specification for one device does not establish the accuracy or usable range of another.
Focus carefully and frame the target
Focus affects temperature measurement, not just image sharpness. FLIR warns that incorrect focus can affect measurements, and the effect is particularly important when the target is small. If the camera supports focus adjustment, bring the target into clear focus before relying on its reading.

Seek’s Compact image-quality troubleshooting guidance recommends checking focus and evaluating the image against a high-contrast scene rather than a low-contrast wall or desk. If the target blends into its background, reposition or reframe it so the camera can distinguish it more clearly.
Match the temperature range to the target
Check that the selected measurement range is suitable for the temperature you expect to observe. A range that does not fit the target can affect how useful the displayed measurement is. Do not confuse this setting with the palette or image scale: those change how thermal information is displayed, not necessarily the measured temperature.

Range limits are model-specific. For example, the FLIR ONE Pro guide describes an extended range of up to 400°C (752°F). That is a stated maximum for that model, not a general capability of phone thermal cameras and not a guarantee of measurement accuracy at the maximum.
Allow calibration, then troubleshoot connection or image faults
The FLIR ONE Pro guide describes periodic mechanical-shutter calibration. Allow the camera to complete its calibration behavior rather than interpreting every interruption or image adjustment as a fault. If readings or images remain abnormal, separate measurement problems from connection or hardware problems and work through the maker’s troubleshooting steps.
- Check that the phone connector is fully seated and clean. FLIR and Seek both advise checking the connector.
- Close and restart the camera app; if needed, restart the phone.
- Try the camera with another compatible phone if one is available. FLIR and Seek both recommend testing another phone as a diagnostic step.
- Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions if the device still will not connect or the image remains defective.
FLIR’s support guidance and Seek’s Compact troubleshooting page provide maker-specific steps. A connection failure or persistently defective image is a different problem from a plausible but inaccurate surface-temperature estimate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen replacement hardware is worth considering
Consider replacement hardware only after checking measurement technique, focus, material settings, and connection behavior. The FLIR ONE Pro is one phone-connected option, but a different camera will not correct an emissivity mismatch or reflected-radiation error. Before choosing any replacement, confirm compatibility with your phone and operating system, its focus capability, supported temperature range, available measurement settings, calibration behavior, and manufacturer support for your model.
