For a new Xbox Series X or Series S, buy only what your setup needs: a second controller for another player, a headset for private audio or chat, or extra storage if your game library is crowding the console. The Series X package includes one controller, an HDMI cable, and a power cord, and most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories work with Series X|S—so check what you already own before spending more.
What should you buy first?
Start with the problem you want to solve, rather than buying a full accessory set. Xbox’s catalog groups its accessories into controllers, headsets and communication, charging solutions, and storage. Those categories cover the main additions a new owner may need.
- Another player needs a controller: consider a second Xbox Wireless Controller, unless you already have a compatible Xbox One controller.
- You want private game audio or voice chat: choose between a wired headset and a wireless headset, checking microphone and device compatibility before buying.
- Your installed game library needs more room: compare the Xbox Storage Expansion Card with a USB 3.1 external hard drive. They are different storage options, not interchangeable equivalents.
Xbox’s accessories catalog lists the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Wireless Headset, Xbox Stereo Headset, Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C, and storage expansion cards.

Controllers: add a player or replace a controller
Check the box and your existing accessories
A Series X package includes one controller, so a second controller is useful when another person will play locally; it is not an automatic first purchase. Xbox says most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories are compatible with Series X|S. Check the exact accessory and its condition before buying a duplicate or assuming an older item will meet your needs.

For a straightforward replacement or extra controller, the Xbox Wireless Controller is the standard option presented in Xbox’s catalog. The catalog also lists the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The available information establishes those product choices, but does not establish that one is better for every player or provide a performance or value comparison.
Choose by use, not by a blanket ranking
- Extra player: look for a second controller only if your current compatible controller count is too low.
- Replacement: consider the standard Xbox Wireless Controller if you need another conventional controller.
- Premium feature set: compare the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 with the standard model against the features you actually want; the product listing alone is not evidence of a universal advantage.
Headsets: decide between wired and wireless
Xbox lists both the wireless Xbox Headset and wired Xbox Stereo Headset, as well as compatible headsets from other manufacturers. A wired model avoids choosing a wireless setup; a wireless model avoids a headset cable. Which trade-off matters more depends on your room and how you play.

Xbox’s catalog confirms product categories and compatibility listings, but the available evidence does not establish which headset sounds best, feels most comfortable, or offers the best value. Treat those as individual preferences rather than settled rankings.
Storage: expansion card or USB hard drive?
The key difference is performance positioning. Xbox describes its Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards as matching the internal SSD’s performance. Xbox separately says the console supports USB 3.1 external HDD storage. That makes the expansion card the directly supported choice when your priority is additional storage at internal-SSD performance; a USB hard drive is a separate route and should not be presented as equivalent.

Xbox Storage Expansion Card
The Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S page specifies compatibility with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S and shows capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB. Xbox and Seagate describe the card as maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the console’s internal SSD. Choose among the listed capacities according to how much additional space you need; the source does not establish current prices or comparative value.
USB 3.1 external HDD
Xbox also identifies USB 3.1 external HDDs as supported storage. Consider this as a distinct option if an external hard drive suits your storage setup, but do not infer from the support statement that it matches the expansion card’s internal-SSD performance. The cited guidance does not establish detailed game-by-game storage or transfer behavior, so check Xbox’s current instructions for the specific games and storage use you have in mind.

What can wait?
Charging accessories and extra storage can wait if your current setup already works. Xbox lists an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C, but a charging purchase is only relevant if it solves a need in your setup. Likewise, there is no reason to add a headset if you do not need private audio or chat, or to buy extra storage before you run short of space.
