Tokens and NFTs do not automatically move to Ethereum when an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) shuts down. They may still be recoverable through Ethereum contracts if the chain’s latest state data, required proofs, and exit mechanism remain available. The outcome depends on the L2’s design and on the contracts that hold or represent the asset.
What does “the L2 shut down” mean?
It can describe very different failures. A website or wallet interface may be unavailable while the chain’s contracts and withdrawal path still work. A sequencer may stop producing transactions, yet users may have another way to submit or prove an exit. More seriously, the L1 contracts needed for withdrawals may be unusable, or the data required to prove ownership may be unavailable.
These situations are not interchangeable. A network’s label—such as “optimistic” or “ZK”—does not by itself establish that a particular asset can be recovered. The relevant questions are whether the latest accepted state can be reconstructed, whether the required proof or message can be produced, whether the L1 contracts still function, and whether the exit covers the asset in question.

| Design or failure | What the documented mechanism supports | What to verify for a specific chain |
|---|---|---|
| Optimistic rollup operator stops producing batches | Ethereum.org’s “Optimistic Rollups” explanation says published data can let another node reproduce the last state and users construct ownership proofs for withdrawals. It describes a challenge period of roughly seven days as a general model explanation, not a guarantee for every deployment. | Whether data for the latest accepted state is available; whether the L1 contracts and withdrawal route still work; and the chain’s actual proof requirements and exit timing. |
| ZK rollup operator or interface fails | Ethereum.org’s “Zero-knowledge rollups” explanation describes published state data and validity proofs. ZKsync’s bridge documentation describes proving an L2-to-L1 withdrawal message on the L1 bridge. | Which batch contains the withdrawal, how to obtain the required message and proof, and whether the L1 bridge contract remains usable. |
| Validium operator or data fails | StarkEx documentation distinguishes its ZK-rollup mode, where data needed to recover the balances tree is published onchain, from Validium mode, where balances data is held offchain by a Data Availability Committee. Its documented escape path depends on obtaining the relevant state and Merkle proof. | Who holds the required data, whether it can be made available, and whether a proof can be built for the latest state. |
| NFT or application-held asset | The cited general rollup and bridge documentation does not establish universal emergency support for arbitrary NFTs or application-specific state. | The NFT contract, any L1 escrow or counterpart, the application contract controlling the asset, and whether the official exit mechanism supports that asset. |
Optimistic rollups
Ethereum.org explains that optimistic rollups publish transaction data on Ethereum. If an operator goes offline, another node may be able to use that data to reproduce the last state; users may then construct Merkle proofs of ownership and withdraw. The usual canonical L1 withdrawal includes a challenge period, described by Ethereum.org as roughly seven days. That is a general explanation: the actual delay and procedure are chain-specific, and the existence of published data does not prove that every other part of a deployment’s exit path will work.

The OP Stack specification illustrates why an operator stopping does not itself trigger an automatic refund. An L2 account sends a withdrawal message to the L2-to-L1 message passer, and a relayer proves that message on OptimismPortal. A withdrawal therefore depends on the message and proof process, not merely on the operator being offline.
ZK rollups
Ethereum.org describes ZK rollups as publishing data needed to reconstruct state and using validity proofs to verify state changes. An exit still requires proof that the withdrawal transaction is included and a working path through the rollup’s L1 contract. ZKsync’s bridge documentation likewise describes finalizing an L2-to-L1 withdrawal by proving inclusion of its withdrawal message on the L1 bridge. These describe ordinary mechanisms; they are not assurances that every failure scenario or deployment has the same recovery path.

Validium and offchain data
A Validium’s data-availability assumptions differ from a rollup that publishes reconstructible state data on Ethereum. StarkEx documentation says its Validium mode keeps balances data offchain with a Data Availability Committee; committee members retain copies and may return data to the public domain if operators do not service withdrawal requests. A user still needs the data and a Merkle proof for the relevant state to use the documented escape path. Recovery therefore depends on those design-specific data arrangements.
What happens to an NFT?
Do not assume an NFT will be returned to L1 simply because an L2 or its app disappears. An NFT may exist as an L2 token with an L1 escrow or counterpart, or it may be controlled by an application contract. The withdrawal route must support the specific contract and asset; documentation for fungible-token balances or generic bridge messages does not establish that arbitrary NFTs can use an emergency exit.

For a particular NFT, identify its contract address and the contract that currently controls it, then consult the network’s official withdrawal or shutdown instructions. Confirm that the documented process covers that asset and state, not just ordinary token transfers. If the NFT is locked in an application, the application’s contract and any exit procedure for its position matter as much as the chain’s bridge.
How to assess your own withdrawal options
- Identify the exact network and asset. Record the L2 name, token or NFT contract address, and—if relevant—the application contract holding the asset. A ticker or collection name alone may not identify the contract.
- Separate an interface outage from a protocol failure. Check whether only the website, wallet connection, or sequencer is unavailable, or whether the L1 contracts and exit mechanism are affected. An unavailable frontend does not prove that the underlying asset is lost.
- Find the network’s official exit instructions. Look for its withdrawal, forced-action, or escape-hatch procedure, and check that it addresses the current failure and your asset type. Do not assume another L2’s instructions apply.
- Check data and proof requirements. Determine whether the latest accepted state can be obtained or reconstructed and whether you can get the required withdrawal message, Merkle proof, or other proof. For a Validium, establish how the required offchain data can be obtained.
- Confirm that the L1 route is usable. Verify the relevant L1 contract and any applicable waiting period or finalization step. A published state or a created withdrawal message alone does not complete an exit.
A specific example: dYdX v3’s Escape Hatch
The dYdX Explorer’s “Escape Hatch Explained” guide warns that dYdX v3 has been discontinued and its exchange contracts are frozen. It describes Forced Actions for cases where the system is operating but the normal interface is unavailable or an operator does not honor a request; after the configured period, users can request a freeze. Once frozen, the guide says users can request withdrawals of full balances through Ethereum contracts and Merkle proofs.
