To get stubborn pet hair off floors, use the right vacuum setting for the surface, move slowly, and make a few passes from different directions on carpet. A doormat, quick paw wipe, and regular brush-bar checks can also reduce buildup and keep the vacuum working as intended.
1. Stop some hair and debris at the door
Place a doormat at entrances and keep a towel nearby to wipe your pet’s paws, particularly in wet weather. This will not catch every loose hair, but it can reduce the debris that gets carried onto your floors.
2. Choose a setting that suits the floor
Check both the flooring manufacturer’s care guidance and your vacuum’s manual before choosing a head or brush setting. Use a hard-floor or bare-floor setting when your model provides one and it is appropriate for your floor. Brush controls and floor heads vary: a rotating brush may be unsuitable for some delicate floors and can fuzz some carpets.
For example, Dyson’s V8 SV10 Absolute manual describes guidance for that specific model; it should not be treated as instructions for every vacuum. Consult your own model’s operating manual and, where relevant, the manufacturer’s brush-control and floor-setting troubleshooting page.

3. Vacuum slowly and methodically
Rushing over a patch can leave hair behind. Dyson’s cleaning guidance recommends moving slowly so airflow and the brush have time to collect hair. This is manufacturer advice, not an independent comparison of vacuuming speeds or models. Dyson’s pet-hair cleaning guidance explains its approach.
4. Change direction on carpet
Hair can become embedded in carpet fibers, so vacuuming from only one direction may miss some of it. Make a few slow passes, alternating directions to disturb and collect hair from different angles. Dyson reports that its own research found little additional gain after two or three passes; the company does not detail the study method in the cited article, so treat that number as Dyson-reported guidance rather than a universal limit.

5. Keep up with hair and maintain the vacuum
Regular cleaning can help prevent hair from accumulating into a tougher job. When you notice hair or fibers on the brush bar, check your specific manual for the correct removal procedure. Turn off or disconnect the machine as the manual directs before doing maintenance; do not assume every model is cleared the same way.

A microfiber cloth can help pick up remaining hair in corners or other hard-to-reach spots. Its charged fibers can attract loose hair, but use it as a targeted follow-up rather than a substitute for vacuuming the floor.

What to look for in a vacuum for pet hair
If you are comparing vacuums, focus on whether the available floor settings and brush controls suit your surfaces, whether the included head is appropriate for them, and how easily you can clear hair from the brush bar. Treat filtration claims separately from hair pickup: for example, Dyson states that its latest HEPA vacuums have 99.97% filtration efficiency down to 0.1 micron, and that its vacuums are engineered to trap 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. These are manufacturer claims, not independent measures of pet-hair pickup, and they should not be generalized to all vacuums.
