M96’s lopsided spiral arms and uneven gas and dust suggest that gravity from nearby galaxies has influenced it. Deep images also reveal faint streams and signs consistent with gas accretion—but the galaxy’s outer stellar disk is only mildly disturbed. The evidence points to interaction, not a proven recent major merger.

Why does M96 look asymmetric?

Messier 96, also known as M96 or NGC 3368, is a spiral galaxy in Leo, about 35 million light-years away, according to NASA’s Hubble Mission Team. NASA describes it as roughly comparable in mass and size to the Milky Way, with weak spiral arms, unevenly distributed gas and dust, and a core offset from the galaxy’s center. Its arms are asymmetric, which NASA says may reflect gravitational influence from other galaxies in the group.

That appearance is evidence of an uneven galaxy, not a record of one specific collision. To reconstruct its past, astronomers look beyond the bright spiral pattern for faint stellar structures, gas features, and signs of star formation—and distinguish what is observed from what those clues may mean.

Did M96 collide with another galaxy?

There is evidence that M96 has been affected by interactions, but it does not establish a recent major collision. In a 2014 deep-imaging study, Watkins, Mihos, Harding, and Feldmeier identified three extremely faint, streamlike features, with reported B-band surface brightnesses of approximately 29.2–29.9 mag arcsec−2. Such structures may be tidal, though their origin is not certain; two may be associated with the Leo HI ring.

The study also found mild asymmetry in M96’s extreme outer disk. Its color asymmetry may reflect mild star formation connected to gas accretion from the HI ring. These are clues consistent with interaction and accretion, not a definitive account of a violent merger.

What is the Leo HI ring, and is M96 pulling gas from it?

The Leo HI ring is a large structure of neutral hydrogen gas associated with the M96 Group. The 2014 study found photometric evidence consistent with M96 accreting gas from the ring, but the connection between the ring and individual galaxies—and how the ring formed—remains uncertain.

The authors found no diffuse, large-scale optical counterpart to the ring down to their reported limits of μB = 30.1 mag arcsec−2 and μV = 29.5 mag arcsec−2. Those values describe the study’s sensitivity in the B and V bands; they do not mean the hydrogen ring itself was absent. The study detected smaller, very faint streamlike features, but did not find a broad optical structure that settles the ring’s origin.

Is there evidence of a merger elsewhere in the M96 Group?

The M96 Group, also called the Leo I Group, includes M96, M95, M105, NGC 3384, and smaller members. The deep-imaging study found different signs of disturbance in different galaxies, so features elsewhere in the group should not be attributed to M96.

Galaxy What the study observed What it suggests
M96 Mild asymmetry in the extreme outer disk and color asymmetry Possible mild star formation associated with gas accretion from the HI ring; not evidence by itself of a recent major merger
NGC 3384 Diffuse shells Consistent with a recent minor merger
M105 and M95 Outer isophotes appear almost undisturbed No comparably strong outer-structure disturbance reported

The findings show why deep, low-surface-brightness imaging matters: shallow views can miss faint diffuse structures. But depth does not turn every faint feature into proof of a dramatic collision. Even in these deep observations, M96’s outer stellar disk showed only mild asymmetry.

Why is the ring’s origin still unsettled?

A strong encounter is one possible explanation for a large gas structure, but the study describes interaction signatures across the group as “extremely subtle” and notes tension between those observations and scenarios that require strong encounters to form the Leo HI ring. That tension does not rule out past interactions; it means the observed evidence does not straightforwardly support a strong-collision explanation.

The safest reading separates three levels of claim: M96 is visibly asymmetric; deep imaging finds faint structures and signs consistent with accretion; and the exact encounters and history that produced those features remain uncertain. The first two are observational findings, while a detailed collision narrative would go beyond what they establish.
