A laboratory study published in October 2026 found that 405 nm violet-blue light treatment affected all 64 tested Campylobacter isolates collected through UK poultry surveillance. That makes the approach promising as a possible poultry-processing intervention, but it does not show that blue light has reduced chicken contamination at retail or prevented human illness. Trials on naturally contaminated carcasses in real processing settings are still needed.
What the 2026 blue-light study found
The peer-reviewed paper, One light to rule them all: photodynamic inactivation of diverse Campylobacter, was published in Microbiology on 5 October 2026. The University of Reading and Animal and Plant Health Agency researchers tested 64 field isolates from UK poultry surveillance programmes. The isolates represented three Campylobacter species and varied antibiotic-resistance profiles; all were similarly susceptible to the treatment.
The researchers also exposed bacteria repeatedly in laboratory evolution assays. After 15 exposures, they detected no increase in tolerance in the tested isolates. This result is encouraging, but it does not establish that tolerance could never emerge under broader or different conditions.

How violet-blue photodynamic inactivation works
Violet-blue photodynamic inactivation (VB-PDI) uses 405 nm visible light to activate photosensitizers that occur naturally inside bacteria. Those molecules generate reactive oxygen species at levels that can kill bacteria. The report describes the approach as requiring no physical contact or added chemical, with potential application to poultry carcasses in processing plants.

These are characteristics of the proposed technique, not proof that a commercial system is already operating. The isolate study measured bacterial response in laboratory assays; it did not test a production line or measure food-poisoning cases.
Could it reduce contaminated chicken reaching shops?
The University of Reading’s 6 October 2026 report gives a conditional estimate: if treatment reduced carcass contamination by a factor of 100, the share of highly contaminated carcasses reaching retail could fall from around 1 in 10 to around 1 in 50. This is a scenario based on a hypothetical reduction, not a result observed in the isolate study, in retail chicken, or in illness rates.

The potential matters because the University of Reading report says Campylobacter causes hundreds of thousands of UK cases each year and estimates its annual cost at £700 million in healthcare and lost productivity. Those are contextual burden estimates, not outcomes of the blue-light experiment.
What the older chicken-light study does—and does not—show
A separate 2012 laboratory study used high-intensity 395±5 nm near-UV/visible light, not the 405 nm VB-PDI protocol tested in 2026. On experimentally inoculated skinless chicken fillet treated from 3 cm away, one minute reduced C. jejuni by 2.21 log10 CFU/g and five minutes by 2.62 log10 CFU/g. Ten minutes did not significantly improve the reduction over five minutes. The study also reported no recovered C. jejuni from treated stainless-steel or cutting-board surfaces after an initial inoculum of 2–4 log10 CFU/cm2.

That earlier work is laboratory evidence using a different wavelength and protocol, with experimentally inoculated fillet and surfaces. It does not validate the 2026 treatment on carcasses in commercial processing, and neither study measured a reduction in human illness.
Is blue-light treatment available now?
The cited reports describe a prospective processing technology, not a consumer product or a verified commercial service. The University of Reading says further evaluation using naturally contaminated meat and trials in real processing settings are needed before commercial rollout. The evidence also does not establish regulatory approval, cost-effectiveness, or food-contact safety across every processing condition.

Household blue LEDs should not be treated as equivalent to the studied VB-PDI equipment. The laboratory findings do not provide instructions for disinfecting chicken at home.

CDC guidance says raw chicken can carry Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Clostridium perfringens. Illness can result from undercooking or from raw chicken or its juices contaminating other foods. The experimental processing approach does not change the precautions consumers should use now:

- Do not wash raw chicken; splashing can spread germs to nearby surfaces and food.
- Wash hands and clean surfaces after handling raw chicken.
- Use a food thermometer to check that chicken reaches 165°F internally, following CDC guidance for US consumers.
A food thermometer checks cooking temperature; it does not decontaminate raw chicken or perform the experimental light treatment.
