After three years of using an 80% Charge Limit, MacRumors reporter Juli Clover reported 88% maximum battery capacity for an iPhone 15 Pro Max at 369 cycles. Her later checkpoints were 93% at 343 cycles for an iPhone 16 Pro Max after two years, and 97% at 277 cycles for an iPhone 17 Pro Max after one year. Those readings show what happened to three particular phones; they do not prove the 80% limit caused the results or quantify how much battery life it may preserve.
What the three-year results show
Clover’s October 2026 MacRumors report recorded these maximum-capacity and cycle-count readings while the phones were configured with an 80% charge limit:

These are readings from different iPhone generations at different ages, not a head-to-head durability ranking. The older phones also accumulated relatively few cycles during the latest year of the series, which makes year-to-year changes difficult to interpret as an effect of the charge limit alone. Clover’s three-year report is a personal longitudinal account, not a controlled test.

Does charging an iPhone to 80% extend battery life?
The results are consistent with these particular phones retaining the reported capacity while the limit was enabled, but they cannot establish that the limit caused those outcomes. Usage intensity, temperature, charging method, device-to-device variation, and cycle count can all complicate comparisons; the report does not control those factors across the phones.

Earlier comparisons were mixed
At the one-year iPhone 15 Pro Max checkpoint in 2024, Clover reported 94% maximum capacity at 299 cycles. Two coworkers’ uncapped phones showed 87% at 329 cycles and 90% at 271 cycles. The comparison was small and uncontrolled, and differences in charging and use could have contributed. The 2024 account described any possible advantage as modest.
At the one-year iPhone 16 Pro Max checkpoint in 2025, the capped phone showed 94% at 299 cycles, while a coworker’s uncapped iPhone 16 Pro Max showed 96% at 308 cycles. Clover also reported the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 88% after two years and 352 cycles. These observations do not isolate the charge limit as the cause of either result. The 2025 follow-up reflects the reporter’s experience, not a controlled comparison.

Separately, 9to5Mac reported that Macwelt analyzed 102 voluntary screenshots submitted by Facebook users with iPhone 15 devices. The reported t-test p-value was 0.047121; after excluding devices below 140 cycles, the analysis included 89 submissions and reported p=0.047547. This was a self-selected observational sample described second-hand, and the article characterized the absolute capacity differences as small. It is not a randomized trial or a reliable promise of a particular outcome for an individual phone. 9to5Mac’s account summarizes the figures.

Is the 80% charge limit worth it?
It depends on whether the battery reserve you give up is more useful to you than a possible reduction in time spent near a full charge. In Clover’s account, the 80% ceiling sometimes left her short during camera or GPS use, so she carried a battery pack. She found the reduced runtime hard to justify on the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro Max; the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s larger battery made the limit less difficult to live with. Those are personal observations, not a prediction for every owner.

- Consider a lower limit if your normal day ends with charge to spare and you value limiting how often the phone sits near full.
- Choose more reserve if long days, navigation, camera use, or other demanding tasks often leave you needing extra runtime. A portable battery pack is an optional workaround, not a requirement or a battery-health treatment.
- Try an intermediate limit if 80% feels restrictive: Apple provides settings in five-point increments, including 90% and 95%.
- Use Optimized Battery Charging if you generally want a full charge but do not need the phone to reach it as early during a regular charging routine.
How Apple’s Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging work
Apple’s support guidance for iPhone 15 models and later describes a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in five-point steps. Below 100%, the phone may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its state-of-charge estimate accurate. At a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging can delay charging beyond 80% in certain situations, using on-device learning of your routine to aim for a full charge near the time you unplug. Apple’s Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging guidance was published on 12 December 2025.
Set or change the Charge Limit
- Open Settings on an iPhone 15 model or later.
- Tap Battery, then Charging.
- Choose a Charge Limit between 80% and 100% in five-point increments.
When the limit is below 100%, an occasional full charge is expected behavior, not evidence that the setting failed.

Why Optimized Battery Charging may not delay the top-up yet
Apple says Optimized Battery Charging is on by default during iPhone setup. Its routine learning requires at least 14 days and at least nine charges lasting five or more hours in a given location before the feature engages. A changing schedule or location may therefore make the behavior less predictable.

The three checkpoints document the capacity readings of Clover’s phones under her changing real-world routines. The first-year iPhone 15 comparison suggested a possible difference; the iPhone 16 comparison at one year did not show an advantage for the capped phone. Neither these comparisons nor the three-year series establishes a guaranteed lifespan extension or a causal benefit for other iPhones. Use the limit as a runtime-versus-charging trade-off, not as a proven way to add a specific number of years to a battery.
