Shadow Fight 4: Arena is a team fighter: choose three heroes, learn how each creates an opening, and build a lineup that can answer the opponent’s plan. This guide covers 12 heroes with source-supported ability and strategy descriptions. It is not a complete roster index or a move-by-move attack list: exact inputs, frame data, and damage values are not established here.

Hero advice below draws on Nekki’s official descriptions and help guidance. Pocket Gamer’s character guide, updated 5 October 2026 for version 1.9.85, is a secondary strategy reference; its assessments are editorial recommendations, not official balance rankings or guaranteed results. Balance changes can make advice stale.

How the three-fighter team format shapes your strategy

Nekki describes Arena as a team format in which each player chooses three fighters with unique, upgradeable abilities and tries to counter the opposing team’s tactic. The practical implication is to think in terms of complementary plans, not just three individually strong picks. For example, a hero who pressures shadow-energy users can provide a different kind of utility from one built around close-range attacks.

Heroes can be upgraded and gain talents. The Google Play listing describes online PvP, offline play against bots, teams of three, and availability on Android and Windows; it says online PvP requires a stable internet connection. Store details can change.

How to block, throw, and answer repeated attacks

How to block attacks?

Nekki’s help center says to stop moving and avoid pressing buttons for a few seconds; the character blocks automatically. This is general guidance, not a guarantee that blocking will stop every attack in every situation.

How to throw

At close range, press attack together with movement toward the opponent to throw. A throw depends on getting close, so do not treat it as a long-range answer.

How to counter repeated attacks

The help center recommends blocking—including by doing nothing or walking—and then answering with a quick attack. Treat that as a general response to repeated attacks rather than a universal counter: the right answer still depends on the move and situation.

Character strategies: openings, preferred plans, and responses

The entries explain each hero’s source-supported tactical identity. They are not exhaustive move lists. Where a response is suggested, it is a practical reading of the described ability, not a tested matchup result.

Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War - PlayStation 4
  • Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-Earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the dark lord and Nazgul.
  • Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories - anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly soldier to a mighty overlord.
  • Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron' s fortresses and turn them against him.

Ling: wait for an opening, then punish

Nekki presents Ling as a patient, defensive fighter who waits for an opening and punishes with his katana. His description also names a flask. The central plan is to avoid rushing into attacks and make the opponent’s commitment the opening for a katana punish. Against Ling, avoid assuming that constant forward pressure is automatically safe; his recommended style is built around waiting to respond.

Marcus: threaten with a heavy sword

Marcus’s heavy sword deals high damage, while Through the Glitch makes his attacks faster and less predictable, according to Nekki. This gives him a direct threat with an unpredictability tool. Watch for changes in attack timing rather than relying on one expected rhythm; do not infer a guaranteed punish window from the description alone.

Azuma: disrupt shadow form

Azuma’s attacks can neutralize shadow energy, and a successful hit can knock an opponent out of shadow form. That makes him a useful counter-oriented pick when the opposing plan depends on shadow abilities. His value is tied to landing a hit, so the ability description does not imply that shadow-based strategies are automatically shut down.

Ironclad: make the fight close

Nekki describes Ironclad as strongest at close range, with shadow abilities that can help him close distance. He has no ranged attack, and the official description emphasizes defensive resilience. He wants to get into range where that close-combat strength matters; opponents should be alert to his approach rather than assume they can keep him out indefinitely.

  • Explore late 1500S sengoku Japan, a brutal period of constant life and death conflict, as you come face to face with larger than life foes in a dark and twisted world

Shang: build toward shadow-ability combos

Shang’s plan centers on building toward shadow form and using successful shadow-ability combos to overwhelm the opponent. The strategic hinge is his access to that resource and his ability to convert it into a combo. Azuma’s shadow-neutralizing attacks and Kate’s shadow-energy drain are source-described ways to challenge plans that rely on shadow energy.

Fireguard: use regenerating shadow energy

Fireguard’s shadow energy regenerates automatically, so Nekki recommends using shadow techniques. His description also notes a self-destruct effect after fatal damage. Account for that effect when a fight reaches its end; do not treat defeating him as risk-free merely because he has taken fatal damage.

Kate: drain shadow energy and press dependent opponents

Kate can drain an opponent’s shadow energy. Nekki recommends an aggressive approach against opponents who depend on that resource. Her clearest role is disruption: pressure shadow-energy users and make it harder for them to execute their planned abilities. This is utility, not a claim that every shadow-based hero is an automatic win for Kate.

Yukka and Shade: turn Wounds into Guillotine damage

Yukka can command Shade to attack, and Guillotine damage increases with the opponent’s Wounds, according to Nekki. The source-supported tactical link is to use Shade and pay attention to the Wounds condition when considering Guillotine. No damage threshold or guaranteed attack sequence is established.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - PlayStation 4
  • Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
  • Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
  • Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings.

Kibo: commit carefully to accurate attacks

Nekki’s description warns that missed attacks cost Kibo shadow energy. Consider distance before committing and prioritize accuracy over throwing attacks out speculatively. Her resource cost makes a miss consequential, but the source does not specify an exact amount.

Emperor: transform, then exploit increased damage

The Emperor accumulates shadow energy to transform into the Shadow Beast, which deals increased damage. His plan is to build that resource and use the transformation aggressively. Opponents choosing a shadow-energy disruption hero such as Azuma or Kate can challenge this plan, though no specific matchup outcome is established.

Jack Bulwark: defend against shadow form and carry Fractures across rounds

Jack’s Shadow Fortress can block attacks during an opponent’s shadow form. Nekki also says Fractures persist between rounds. Those details make him a defensive answer to shadow-form pressure and give Fractures relevance beyond the current round. The description does not quantify the effect or say that Shadow Fortress blocks every attack.

Jet: build Cyclone charges before pressing

Nekki advises caution early, building Cyclone charges and then using attacks that can break blocks. Jet’s plan is therefore staged: take care early, build the resource, then apply block-breaking pressure. The source does not specify a charge count, exact attack input, or timing.

Choosing a lineup by tactical role

There is no source-supported universal best character: usefulness depends on the mode, roster level, build, and patch. This comparison stays within the characteristics established by Nekki. Pocket Gamer’s 1.9.85 guide also compares rarity, faction or type, difficulty, abilities, and suggested playstyle, but the available character-specific difficulty values are not stated here.

Need or plan Relevant hero What the description supports
Disrupt shadow energy Azuma Attacks can neutralize shadow energy; a hit can end an opponent’s shadow form.
Drain shadow energy Kate Can drain the opponent’s shadow energy; Nekki recommends aggression against dependent opponents.
Close-range pressure Ironclad Strongest at close range; shadow abilities can help him close distance; no ranged attack.
Shadow-ability combo plan Shang Build toward shadow form and use successful shadow-ability combos.
Resource-based transformation Emperor Accumulate shadow energy, transform into Shadow Beast, and use increased damage.
Patient defensive punishment Ling Wait for an opening and punish with the katana.
Build-and-release pressure Jet Build Cyclone charges, then use attacks that can break blocks.

Build a trio around the opponent’s likely plan: a shadow-energy answer can complement a close-range fighter, while a resource-building hero may need teammates whose plans do not all rely on the same resource. These are lineup principles, not a ranking; test choices against the roster and build you actually face.

Hero progression and shadow energy

Nekki’s help center says shadow energy fills when you deal and receive damage, and hero talents also affect how it fills. New talents are unlocked using hero shards after you unlock a hero. Those mechanics matter to resource-dependent plans such as Shang’s, the Emperor’s, and Kibo’s; actual progression and talent effects depend on the selected hero and unlocked build.

Playing with a controller

Nekki support lists DualShock and Xbox controllers, as well as gamepads based on them. It cautions that device-specific settings or installed software can interfere. Controller use is optional, and the support page does not establish that a particular model works with every phone, PC, or configuration.
