Crawl (2019) is the survival thriller behind the Netflix recommendation: Haley Keller searches for her injured father during a Category 5 hurricane, and rising floodwater traps them with alligators in and around their family home. Tom’s Guide reported it streaming on Netflix on 6 October 2026; Netflix availability can vary by country and change over time.
What is Crawl about?
When a Category 5 hurricane bears down, university swimmer Haley Keller ignores evacuation orders and goes looking for her father, Dave. She finds him badly injured beneath their old family home. As floodwater rises and alligators enter the property, the two must find a way out—and keep their dog, Sugar, safe.

The setup makes the house part of the threat. Darkness, tight spaces beneath the building, and water closing in turn each attempted escape into a new problem. The father-daughter history also gives Haley a personal reason to keep fighting beyond simply surviving the storm.
Why does the film work as a survival thriller?
In her favorable Tom’s Guide recommendation, Senior Streaming Writer (UK) Alix Blackburn praises the film’s direct pacing and determined heroine, played by Kaya Scodelario. Barry Pepper plays Dave. Blackburn says the escape attempts keep introducing obstacles and singles out the crawl-space sequences for their confined, dark setting and rising water.

Blackburn sums up her view this way: “The movie is tight, relentless and never loses sight of what it wants to be.” That is one writer’s assessment, not an aggregate review or a technical evaluation of the effects. She notes that the CGI is not always convincing, but says it does not derail the film for her.
Is Crawl better than 2026’s creature features?
Blackburn prefers Crawl to the 2026 creature features she had watched, including Thrash and The Devil’s Mouth, which feature sharks, and Hungry, about a territorial hippopotamus. That is a personal comparison, not an objective ranking or a comparison based on shared scores.
Rank #2
The films also offer different kinds of peril: Crawl combines a hurricane with a family rescue in a confined home, while the other titles center on different animals and situations. If you want a focused, escalating escape story with a human relationship at its center, Blackburn’s recommendation points to Crawl; preferences about creature effects and story style may lead other viewers elsewhere.
