I can’t honestly call this “everything I’m taking”: the available material does not establish the author’s actual gear or personal trail experience. What it does support is a practical, route-specific packing plan—and the checks that can change it—based on Arizona Trail Association resources and gear guidance published through October 7, 2026.
Why the Arizona Trail calls for adaptable gear
The Arizona Trail crosses desert, Sky Islands and high plateaus between Mexico and Utah. Treeline Review’s February 5, 2026 guide describes it as an 800-mile (1,287-kilometer) route, with 109,500 feet (33,300 meters) of elevation gain and loss, a high point of 9,600 feet and a low point of 1,700 feet. The same guide estimates four to six weeks for a thru-hike. These are that guide’s figures, not independently verified measurements or a prediction for an individual itinerary.
That range of terrain makes a single-condition kit a poor planning assumption. The Arizona Trail Association’s gear article emphasizes sun protection and a three-season layering system; Treeline Review reports possible lows in the 30s and highs in the 100s. Treat those temperatures as source-reported context, not a forecast for your dates or passage.

Sun protection and clothing
Plan clothing for strong sun as well as changing temperatures. The Association-hosted gear article calls out sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and UV-resistant long sleeves. A sun hoodie is one example named in Treeline Review’s 2026 gear list, not a required item. Choose clothing that fits your body, covers the exposure you expect, and can work with your layering system; the sources do not establish one ideal garment for every hiker.

Water treatment and capacity
A filter and suitable water containers appear in the 2026 gear guidance. Treeline Review names the Sawyer Squeeze as an example of a water filter, not as a universal recommendation. Neither a filter nor a route-wide capacity rule makes a dry or unreliable source usable: the Arizona Trail Association maintains water-source information with reported conditions, and availability can change. Check the current listing passage by passage and plan each carry around the sources and distances on your itinerary. The available information does not support one water capacity that is adequate for everyone or every section.
Pack, shelter and sleep system
Choose a pack only after estimating the combined volume and weight of your food, water and other equipment for the longest carry you expect. Fit and comfort matter alongside capacity; a named example is the Zpacks Arc Haul 50L Backpack in Treeline Review’s 2026 guide, but the guide’s inclusion does not establish that it fits your body or load. The 2022 Association-hosted gear article discusses flexible shelter choices, while Treeline Review names the Katabatic Gear Palisade 30F Quilt. Those are examples from other writers’ gear lists, not items this article’s author can claim to own, carry or have tested. Match shelter and sleep-system choices to your dates, conditions, preferences and established kit.

Cooking and electronics
The Association-hosted gear article treats cooking and electronics as areas for flexible choices rather than one fixed setup. Decide what belongs in your own system based on the itinerary and how you prefer to hike; the sources do not establish a single required stove, electronics package or configuration.

The Arizona Trail Association organizes its trail resources around 43 passages and provides maps, water-source information, closures and gateway-community information. Use those resources as live planning references rather than treating any printed or older gear article as a current status report.

Closures and reroutes
On October 5, 2026, the Association listed a prescribed-burn closure extending 6.2 miles north and south of Orderville Trailhead on Passages 41 and 42, with a dirt-road detour until the area is declared safe. Its August 31, 2026 autumn update reported that flash flooding had closed 16 miles of Grand Canyon route, including Passage 38 from The Tipoff to North Kaibab Trailhead. At that time, the update also listed Silver and Black Bridges, Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch as closed and said normal in-park water sources were likely off. These are dated reports, not confirmation of current conditions. Check the Association’s current closure notices and relevant land-manager updates immediately before departure; do not enter closed areas or assume a previously reported detour is still in effect.
In its August 31 update, Arizona Trail Association author Matthew Nelson wrote: “Please avoid closed areas, understand the hazards of traveling through burned forests that have reopened, and enjoy every mile you’re able to hike or ride this year.”

Saguaro National Park overnight permit
The Recreation.gov Arizona Trail Thru Hiker Overnight Permit applies to overnight stays at shared sites at Grass Shack or Manning Campground in Saguaro National Park during the selected date range. Thru-hikers and section hikers can reserve it year-round, and each hiker needs an individual permit. It does not reserve a private site, allow camping outside the designated sites or cover the separate park entrance fee. It is not a permit for the entire Arizona Trail. Check Recreation.gov and the other agencies administering the places on your itinerary for current requirements.
Turn this plan into your own packing list
Before assigning exact products or quantities, write down the choices that depend on your hike rather than assuming another person’s list will fit:
Best Value
- Your dates and itinerary, including which passages you will hike and current closures or reroutes.
- The water sources and expected carry for each passage, checked against current conditions.
- Your clothing and sun-protection system for exposure and temperature variation.
- Your pack’s fit and capacity with the food and water loads your route requires.
- Your shelter, sleep system, cooking and electronics choices, based on your established setup.
- Any permits and fees required for the specific places and overnight stops on your route.
The 2022 Association-hosted gear article also suggests considering used equipment before buying new. Any product named in this article is an example from a published gear list, not a substitute for checking fit, capacity, protection, durability, repairability and price for your own needs.
