A UK domestic bank transfer can fail because the account number or sort code is mistyped, the pair does not identify a usable destination, the account is closed or cannot accept the payment, or the payee name or required reference does not match. Check the details against a trusted source and resolve any bank warning before authorising the payment. These are common operational failure patterns, not an exhaustive list; other countries and payment routes use different identifiers and checks.
Why did my bank transfer fail?
For many UK domestic transfers, the relevant details are a sort code and account number. A bank may reject a payment when the data fails a format check, does not route to a recognised account, points to an account that cannot receive the payment, or fails a payee-name or reference check. The specific checks and responses vary by bank, account eligibility and payment type.
1. The sort code or account number is mistyped or in the wrong format
A missing or extra digit can make a field invalid. The expected account-number length can depend on the account type associated with the sort code: HMRC gives an example of a seven-digit number where the associated account type requires eight digits, and says either the account number or sort code could be wrong. See HMRC’s Tax Credits Manual, TCM0078460; this is an example from tax-credit repayment administration, not a universal bank rule.

A format check can catch an incomplete or incorrectly sized entry, but correctly formatted numbers do not prove that the account belongs to the intended recipient.

2. The sort code and account number do not identify a valid destination
Two complete-looking fields can still fail when they do not form a recognised destination. HMRC lists invalid sort codes and cases where the receiving bank cannot identify a customer account from the details supplied as reasons for repayment rejection. RBS also lists an invalid sort-code/account-number combination as a Faster Payment rejection reason. These are routing or account-recognition problems, rather than necessarily a simple missing digit. The examples are specific to those institutions and payment contexts: HMRC’s Self Assessment Manual, SAM110030 and RBS Faster Payment rejection and reason codes.
3. The account is closed or cannot accept the payment
Correct details can become outdated. RBS lists a closed beneficiary account as a separate Faster Payment rejection reason. HMRC’s repayment guidance also describes cases where a repayment cannot be made to the building-society account specified. If a payment instruction has changed or a saved payee may be stale, confirm the current details with the intended person or business using a contact route you already trust. These examples do not establish that every closed or restricted account will produce the same response.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
4. The payee name or required reference does not match
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) checks the payee name against account details when adding or changing a payee or setting up a payment, where the bank and account support the check. Some accounts require a roll number or credit-card number as a reference for the name check; HSBC says an invalid or unrecognised reference can trigger an error. Its help page explains that a response may indicate, “This means the account number and/or sort code are incorrect.” Read the result and confirm any reference with the recipient through a trusted number or in person before proceeding. See HSBC UK’s Confirmation of Payee guidance.

Checks differ in what they examine and when they run. A format check, an account-pair lookup and a name check are not interchangeable, and none alone establishes that the person asking you to pay is legitimate.

| Check | What it can help identify | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Compare with trusted original details | Transcription mistakes or unexpected changes, when you compare the fields with bank-issued details or confirm them directly with the intended payee. | That a payment request or the person sending new instructions is genuine if you rely on the same unverified message. |
| Check field format and the sort-code/account-number pairing | Missing digits, invalid formatting, or a pair that a bank or service does not recognise. | That the account belongs to the person you intend to pay. Account-number length can depend on the account type and associated sort code; do not pad or truncate numbers based on a generic assumption. |
| Confirmation of Payee, where available | Whether the submitted name matches the account details, and whether a required reference is accepted. | That the request is free of fraud, or that every account and payment route is eligible for the check. “Could not check” is not confirmation that the details are correct. |
| Third-party bank-validation service | Capabilities vary; a UK Government Digital Marketplace service definition describes validation of bank accounts and IBANs, including UK sort-code/account-number information. | That a particular provider is independent, complete, or suitable for every workflow. Check the provider and its data coverage before relying on it. |
The government marketplace document describes a service category, not a guarantee about all validation products: Bank Validation Service, UK Government Digital Marketplace. The available sources do not establish comparative error-detection rates, so there is no sound basis for ranking these checks by a percentage.
How to check details before sending money
- Get the details from a trusted source. Use the intended payee’s bank-issued details or contact them through a number or channel you already know is genuine. If a supplier or personal contact sends replacement payment instructions, independently confirm the change rather than relying only on that new message.
- Enter each value in the expected field and format. Check the sort code and account number against the original. Do not add or remove digits to force a length that seems familiar; the relevant pair and account type matter.
- Review your bank’s payee-check result. If CoP is offered, read the response and resolve a mismatch before paying. A result saying the bank could not check is different from a confirmed match, and a required reference may affect the result.
- Stop at a warning. Do not proceed merely because the account number looks plausible. HSBC warns that if a payment proceeds without an exact match, money could reach the wrong account and may not be recovered.
What if a transfer has already gone to the wrong account?
Contact the sending bank promptly and provide the payment details. Barclays says it can contact the receiving bank to ask whether the payment can be returned; this is a recovery request, not a promise of return or an automatic reversal. The outcome depends on the circumstances and the institutions involved. See Barclays’ guidance on a payment sent to the wrong account.

If the bank rejected the transfer, use the reason it gives to identify what needs correcting. Confirm corrected details with the intended payee, and resolve every flagged issue before trying again rather than changing only one field and resubmitting. HMRC’s detailed action guidance concerns staff handling tax-credit verification failures, not a consumer procedure: HMRC’s Tax Credits Manual, TCM0078480.
