What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a receiver-based home theater, connect the Fire TV Cube’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the AV receiver, then connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. Select the matching input on both the receiver and TV. Audio and video formats such as surround sound, HDR, and Dolby Vision depend on the content and on the capabilities of every device in the signal path.
Connect the Fire TV Cube through the receiver
- Connect a high-speed HDMI cable from the Fire TV Cube’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the AV receiver. Amazon says this cable is required for setup and is not included. See Amazon’s Fire TV Cube setup instructions.
- Connect another HDMI cable from the receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. If you want the receiver to pass a particular resolution or HDR format to the TV, use a receiver input and output that support it, and confirm the receiver can pass that format through.
- Turn on the TV, receiver, and Cube. On the receiver, choose the HDMI input connected to the Cube. On the TV, choose the HDMI input connected to the receiver.
For the third-generation Fire TV Cube, Amazon lists one HDMI 2.1 output with ARC and one HDMI 2.1 input. Port labels and capabilities vary by model, so check the specifications for your Cube, plus your receiver and TV manuals.
Choose between receiver routing and TV ARC/eARC
| Setup | Signal path | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Cube through receiver | Cube → receiver HDMI input → TV | Use this as the straightforward setup when the receiver is meant to reproduce the Cube’s audio. Amazon recommends a direct HDMI connection from a Fire TV device to a soundbar or AV receiver when troubleshooting surround sound. |
| TV audio return | Cube → TV; TV ARC/eARC port → receiver ARC/eARC port | Use this when the TV returns audio from its connected devices to the receiver. The TV and receiver must support the needed ARC/eARC features, and the connection and settings depend on their models. |
ARC/eARC on a receiver connection is not the same as Alexa Home Theater. That feature routes audio to compatible Echo speakers. Amazon’s instructions for compatible Fire TV devices say to connect the third-generation Cube to the TV’s ARC port and disconnect an attached AV receiver for Alexa Home Theater. Follow Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater setup instructions if that is the feature you want.
Troubleshoot missing picture, surround sound, or HDR
No picture
- Check that the Cube is connected to an HDMI input on the receiver and that the receiver’s HDMI output is connected to the TV.
- Confirm the receiver is set to the Cube’s input and the TV to the receiver’s input.
- If a resolution or HDR format is missing, check that the receiver supports video passthrough for that format and that the TV supports it too. Amazon’s HDR and Dolby Vision troubleshooting guidance covers capability checks.
No surround sound or the desired audio format
- Verify that the content carries the format and that the Cube, receiver, and other connected equipment support it.
- Use HDMI for the Cube-to-receiver connection. Amazon says optical cables do not fully support surround sound.
- Check Fire TV audio diagnostics, where available, for connected-device capabilities. If the desired format is not detected, try a lower audio format. See Amazon’s Fire TV surround-sound troubleshooting.
Cube voice commands are unreliable
Amazon recommends keeping the Cube one foot (30 cm) from speakers and not placing it inside a closed cabinet so it can hear voice commands. This is placement guidance for voice pickup, not a requirement for the HDMI signal path.

Check compatibility before changing cables or settings
A connected receiver can limit what reaches the TV or which audio format reaches the speakers. For a desired format, verify support across the source content, Cube, receiver, TV, and the relevant HDMI connections. Consult each device’s manual for exact input labels, passthrough limits, and menu names; compatibility cannot be assumed from the presence of HDMI alone.
