The Gemini setting to try is Instructions for Gemini, under Personal Intelligence. It lets you save preferences such as “start with a short summary” or “use bullet points for long explanations,” so Gemini can shape its replies around how you like information presented. It is a response-style control, not an accuracy switch: Google does not claim that it makes answers more factually correct, and no measured improvement is established.
Where are Gemini custom instructions?
On an eligible personal Google Account, open Gemini settings → Personal Intelligence → Instructions for Gemini, add your instruction, and submit it. In the mobile app, start from the menu or profile area; on the web, start in Settings & help. Google’s instructions for customizing Gemini’s responses cover the current controls and interface.
From the same setting, Google says you can view, edit, delete, and turn instructions on or off. Menu labels and availability can vary as Gemini changes, so use the linked help page if your screen differs.
How do I make Gemini give better answers?
Give Gemini a clear, bounded preference about the format or level of detail you want. For example, Google suggests asking for a short summary first or bullet points for long explanations. These are examples of preferences, not tested recipes or guarantees; verify important facts independently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Useful: “Start with a short summary, then explain the details.”
- Useful: “Use bullet points when explaining a process with several steps.”
- Less suitable for this setting: a demand that Gemini never make mistakes or always avoid a topic. Preferences cannot guarantee accuracy or perfect compliance.
Instructions are intended to guide responses, not to supply facts Gemini does not know. If an answer is wrong, ask it to show its reasoning or sources where appropriate and check consequential claims against reliable sources.
Instructions, past-chat memory, and connected apps are different
Personal Intelligence includes several ways Gemini may personalize replies. They draw on different information and have separate controls; they are not interchangeable.

Google’s current Personal Intelligence overview describes an eligible-user beta and excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria; age and personal-account requirements apply. Availability can change and may differ by account, region, or feature, so check the controls shown in your own Gemini account. A February 26, 2026 post by Michael Siliski, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, described the past-chat setting as starting to roll out to all users in Canada at that time—not as a universal availability guarantee. Can Gemini use past chats, and how do I control it?
Past-chat memory is separate from saved response instructions. Google’s current help says it requires a personal account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on. You can switch the memory feature off, review or delete chats, and correct Gemini directly if it has misunderstood something. Google cautions: “While Gemini continues to improve, it might not always get it right.” See Google’s past-chat memory help for the current controls.

For information remembered from a connected app, Google says you may need both to delete the relevant chats and disconnect that app. The Personal Intelligence controls explain how to manage those connections: Personal Intelligence from Gemini.
How do I stop Gemini from remembering or mentioning something?
Turning off past-chat memory and deleting a chat address different parts of personalization. If you want Gemini to stop drawing on a conversation, use the current memory and activity controls and delete relevant chats from Gemini Apps Activity. For connected-app information, disconnecting the app may also be necessary, as noted in Google’s memory help.

Do not rely on an instruction alone to make Gemini forget or avoid a subject. Google warns: “Instructions for Gemini to forget or avoid topics in chats doesn’t always work perfectly.” Its guidance is to delete chats about the topic from Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s instructions help
Google’s Safety Center says Gemini activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default, with options to change the period or turn the setting off. That activity-retention control is separate from whether Instructions for Gemini are enabled. Gemini Privacy & Safety Settings

What does Temporary Chat change?
In an August 13, 2025 announcement, Google described Temporary Chat as not appearing in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, not being used to personalize the experience or train Google’s AI models, and being retained for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. Those details come from that dated announcement, so check current in-app privacy information before relying on them as current policy. Google’s Temporary Chat and privacy-controls announcement
