You can share an external hard drive across your home network by connecting it to a router that supports USB storage sharing, enabling the router’s local sharing service, and connecting to the share from your computers. A router’s USB port alone does not guarantee that it can share files; check your model’s manual and settings first.
Check your router and drive before setup
Confirm that your router supports USB storage or file sharing, not just that it has a USB port. The instructions and available services vary by model and firmware. For example, TP-Link’s guide covers local SMB and FTP access on supported routers, but its steps should not be assumed to apply to other models: TP-Link: How to Access a USB Drive on Your TP-Link Router from Windows or Mac.
- Check filesystem support. Use the router’s manual to verify which formats it accepts. TP-Link lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ for the ISP-customized routers covered by its separate guide; that list is not universal: TP-Link: How to access USB storage device on TP-Link ISP-customized router.
- Check power requirements. If the drive requires an external power supply, connect it. A router’s USB port may not provide enough power for every drive.
- Decide who should have access. Check whether the router offers account-based sharing, folder restrictions, or a secure-sharing setting. Do this before placing private files on the share.
Connect the drive and enable sharing
- Attach the drive. Plug it into the router’s USB port and connect its external power supply if required.
- Verify that the router detects it. Sign in to the router’s administration page and open its USB storage or file-sharing section. Confirm that the drive appears in the status or storage page before troubleshooting from a computer.
- Enable a local sharing service. Turn on a service supported by your router, then configure its sharing account and folder permissions if available. Menu names vary by model. TP-Link recommends enabling Secure Sharing in the models covered by its general guide.
- Use safe removal before unplugging. If the router provides a safe-removal control, use it before physically disconnecting the drive.
Open the network drive from Windows
In File Explorer, enter the router’s network path in the address bar. TP-Link gives \tplinkwifi.net and \192.168.0.1 as examples. Replace these with your router’s actual hostname or LAN address, then enter the sharing credentials if prompted.
If the path does not open, first confirm that the router detects the drive and that its local sharing service is enabled. The correct address and access method depend on the router model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open the network drive from macOS
- In Finder, choose Go > Connect to Server.
- Enter an SMB address, such as
smb://tplinkwifi.netorsmb://192.168.0.1, using your router’s actual hostname or LAN address. - Connect and sign in with the account configured for the share.
The example addresses are not universal; use the values and protocol supported by your router.
Limit access and treat remote access separately
A router-attached drive is a shared network location. Check whether guest access is enabled and whether you can restrict access by account or folder. On the ISP-customized TP-Link routers covered by its guide, all network clients can access all folders by default unless sharing is customized. Do not assume another router has the same defaults.

Access from your home network and access from outside it are separate configurations. TP-Link’s general guide describes remote USB access through Internet FTP and says SMB is not supported for remote connections in that setup. Other routers may work differently. Follow your exact model’s security guidance before enabling remote access; a local SMB share is not automatically a secure remote-access service.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The router does not list the drive: Check that the model supports USB storage sharing, inspect its storage status page, and verify the drive’s filesystem against the model-specific manual.
- The drive is missing or powers on intermittently: Connect its bundled external power supply if one is required.
- The share is not ready right away: Allow time for the router to initialize the drive. NETGEAR says a USB drive on a Nighthawk router may take up to two minutes to become ready for sharing; this is specific to that guidance, not a universal timeout: NETGEAR: How do I access a USB storage device connected to my Nighthawk router?.
- Your credentials fail or access is denied: Check whether secure sharing is enabled and use the account configured for the share. Do not assume guest access is enabled or appropriate.
- You need to unplug the drive: Use the router’s safe-removal feature if available.
Know what this setup does—and does not—provide
Router sharing can provide straightforward local access when the router supports the required service and the drive is compatible. It does not, by itself, establish NAS-like speed, reliability, or backup protection. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a like-for-like transfer-speed comparison with a dedicated NAS or a computer acting as a file server.

Before choosing this setup, consider whether your router supports the protocol you need, whether its access controls suit your household, whether it supports the drive’s filesystem and power needs, and whether you require local-only or remote access. For a single external drive, keep a separate backup of important files; sharing the drive over a network does not create another copy.
