You can inspect theHunter: Call of the Wild save data on Windows without altering the original: close the game, copy the full save folder, then point a compatible analyzer at the copy. The game’s official support pages provide current Steam and Epic save locations and backup guidance; what an analyzer can display depends on that specific tool and the files it supports.
Find the right Windows save folder
Official support lists these locations for Windows PC saves. Replace the account placeholder with the folder for the account you intend to inspect:

These paths are from the game’s official save-backup instructions. Confirm the account-specific directory rather than assuming that the first folder you see is the right one. A 2019 Steam community post describes a historical move from an older folder name to COTW; for present-day directions, use the official paths above.

Make a separate copy before inspecting
- Let saving finish. Close the game, or wait until its in-game save indicator has disappeared. Reading a file while the game is writing to or holding it can make an analyzer fail.
- Copy the entire account save folder. Paste it somewhere separate from the original, such as another local drive or a USB flash drive. Official support recommends manually copying save files even where cloud saves are supported; its cloud-save statement excludes Epic Games Store.
- Keep the original untouched. Open the copied folder in the analyzer, not the live folder. Before running it, check the selected directory and account details, especially if you switch between folders.
The official backup guidance discusses platform-specific options: it directs PlayStation players to Sony’s PS4 or PS5 backup instructions, while Xbox does not provide a manual save-data backup method. Xbox save data also cannot be accessed or exported for submission to support, according to the game’s support instructions.

Use an analyzer as a reader, not a repair tool
Choose an analyzer whose documentation clearly describes how it handles files. For example, the independent Call of the Wild Tools analyzer documentation says that it processes raw saves locally by default, does not upload or edit the source save, and does not repair corrupted saves. Those are statements from the tool’s publisher, not an official guarantee or independent audit. Check the current documentation for whichever tool you use.
The tool says it can interpret supported save, population, and profile files to show information such as hunter progress, animals, harvests, and explored locations. These are tool-specific capabilities, not a complete official description of the game’s save format. Official support does not publish a full current schema or guarantee that third-party analyzers cover every game version or file. See the analyzer’s documentation for its stated scope.

Read incomplete reports cautiously
An analyzer’s report is an interpretation of the records it recognizes, not proof that every detail in the save has been read. A missing section or unsupported file can limit the result; it does not, on its own, establish that the save is damaged. Review the tool’s documentation for which files and fields it supports, and distinguish validation or interpretation from repair.

If the analyzer cannot read the copy
- Check whether the game is still saving. Wait for the save indicator to clear, then try reading the copy again. The analyzer’s guide warns that a read can fail while the game is writing to or holding a save file.
- Verify the selected folder. Confirm that the analyzer is pointed at the copied folder for the intended Steam or Epic account, not an empty, old, or different account directory.
- Do not “fix” files as part of inspection. Keep restoration and repair separate from read-only analysis. If the game cannot save or files appear missing, first preserve a separate copy, then follow official backup guidance and the relevant official recovery instructions. Support notes that ransomware protection in security software can prevent the game from creating or modifying saves, and that a PC save slot or cloud backup may offer recovery options.
