Name the frames clearly, keep their dimensions consistent, and add prototype connections only if you want to demonstrate how users move between screens.
1. Start a Figma design file
From Figma’s file browser, create a new design file. Figma’s photo gallery prototype tutorial also describes using the figma.new shortcut URL to start a file.
2. Create and name your first screen
Select the Frame tool or press F, then choose a device preset if you want a frame with familiar screen dimensions. A frame acts as a container for elements such as shapes, text, and images, and frames can be nested. See Figma’s guide to layer types.
Name the frame for its purpose, such as home, search-results, or checkout. Clear names make it easier to find screens and understand a flow as the file grows; Figma’s tutorial uses names such as gallery-view and expanded-view.

3. Build the wireframe with simple shapes and text
Use rectangles and other basic shapes to represent areas such as navigation, images, cards, and controls. Add text layers for headings, labels, and button wording. Keep the detail low: the goal is to communicate the screen’s structure and behavior, not to finish its visual styling. Figma’s low-fidelity gallery example uses frames, rectangles, image fills, and text.
4. Add screens and keep their dimensions consistent
Create a separate frame for each screen or meaningful state. When the next screen uses the same dimensions, duplicate the existing frame, rename it, and update its contents. This preserves a consistent canvas size while you map out the experience.

5. Align content with layout guides when useful
For a layout that needs more structure, add a guide to the frame. Figma supports uniform grids as well as column and row guides; its documentation notes columns and rows as useful for responsive web and mobile layouts. The current term is layout guide: Figma renamed “layout grid” to “layout guide” in May 2025. See Create layout guides.
6. Make repeated elements reusable, if needed
If the same control or block appears on several screens, select its layers and create a component. Components help maintain consistency: Figma says updates to a main component can be applied to its instances. This is optional for a first wireframe; it becomes useful when repeated elements need to stay aligned across a larger set of screens. See Create components to reuse in designs.

7. Connect screens for a clickable walkthrough
A static wireframe is enough to communicate layout. If you want someone to try a path through it, add prototype connections:
- Switch to Prototype mode with
Shift+E. - Select an interactive layer, such as a button, and drag its connection handle to the destination frame.
- Set the trigger and action. For a basic tap-through, use On click and Navigate to.

8. Preview and share the flow
A prototype flow begins at a frame and includes the frames connected to it. Preview the flow to check whether the screen sequence makes sense, then share it if you need others to review the walkthrough. Figma says prototype flows are available on all plans and require edit access to the file; see Create and manage prototype flows.

Figma’s Figma Design for beginners course page states that it was published in May 2025 and cautions that the visual details in its videos may differ from the current interface, while core functionality remains. If a button or panel looks different in your editor, rely on the feature names and steps in the current Help Center documentation.
