Open Silk and visit a website
- Connect your Fire tablet to Wi-Fi or another available internet connection.
- Open the Silk app. Amazon says Silk comes preinstalled on Fire tablets, so you do not need another browser for basic web browsing. Amazon Silk overview
- Tap the field at the top of the screen. Enter a website address, such as a URL, or type words to search.
- Tap a suggested result or submit with the arrow on the on-screen keyboard. Suggestions can be based on the selected search engine and your browsing history. Amazon Silk browsing help
If a page does not load, first check the tablet’s internet connection, then check that the address is correct. Silk is built on the Chromium Project and is updated, but that does not guarantee that every site or video feature behaves identically on every Fire tablet.
Use tabs and basic page controls
- Open a tab: Tap the plus icon. To close a tab, tap its x; Amazon’s help says holding the x displays a Close all tabs option.
- Move around a page: Swipe to scroll. Pinch outward or inward to zoom where the page supports the gesture.
- Find text: Open the menu and choose the find-in-page option to search for text on the current page.
- View history: Open the menu or the left-edge navigation panel and choose History.
Save pages and change how sites look
Reading View and Reading List
On some articles, tap the book icon to open Reading View, which removes much of the page’s graphics, ads, or links for a simpler reading layout. To save a page for offline access, choose Menu > Reading List > Save to Reading List. Offline access depends on having saved the page while connected.
Bookmarks and favorites
Add or edit a bookmark from Silk’s controls, or pin a page as a favorite on the Silk home page. Amazon also documents a Chrome extension that can copy Chrome bookmarks to an Amazon account for use on Fire tablets; that is optional and not needed to browse.

Desktop and mobile layouts
In the menu, choose Desktop Site or Mobile Site to request a different version of a website. A site may have different layouts or functions in each mode; a mobile site is intended for a mobile-optimized experience.
Print or save a page
Amazon says Silk can print a page to a connected wireless printer or save a page as a PDF for offline access. Availability and exact menu labels can vary by Fire OS version and region. Amazon Silk browsing help

What Silk’s privacy options mean
Amazon says Silk stores browsing history locally on the tablet, where it can be viewed, searched, or cleared. Amazon also describes sending logs or crash reports that may include the URL where a problem occurred, recent browsing history, or identifiers such as an IP address or device ID. It says truncated search-page URLs and browsing data such as visited URLs and timestamps may be used for troubleshooting, analytics, and product improvement. Silk’s Privacy settings let users control whether domain data is used for product improvement and analytics, and supported tablets may offer a setting for optional customized recommendations. Text entered in Silk’s address or search bar is sent to the selected third-party search engine, whose own privacy policy applies to the data it collects. Amazon says the initially selected search engine can change and can be changed in Silk settings.

Private Browsing is not anonymity
When a private tab closes, its visited pages are removed from Silk history. Downloads and bookmarks remain. Amazon warns that private browsing does not hide activity from your internet service provider or visited websites, including Amazon-affiliated sites. Amazon Silk privacy FAQ
Set web access for a child or restricted profile
Restrict browsing on an adult profile
Amazon describes the adult-profile parental controls as designed for users 13 and older. To restrict the current profile, swipe down twice, open Settings > Profile and Parental Controls, then turn on Restrict access to current profile. You can block web browsing and require the parental controls password for restricted functions. This password is separate from the lock-screen password; Amazon says a forgotten parental controls password requires a factory reset to restore full access. Choose web access for a child under 13
For a child under 13, Amazon directs caregivers to use a Child Profile and Amazon Kids settings rather than relying on adult-profile restrictions. In Parent Dashboard, the Fire Tablet Web Browser setting offers three access levels:
- Off: Turn off the browser.
- Hand-selected sites and videos: Allow only content you choose.
- Filtered browsing: Let the child browse with the option to block specific sites.
The child’s browsing history is available from the Parent Dashboard homepage. Amazon cautions that Amazon Kids+ parental controls do not apply to other apps, which may need their own controls, and that technology does not replace caregiver involvement. About Amazon: Parent Dashboard guide

Screen and regional differences
Amazon’s Silk browsing and parental-control help pages cited here are UK English versions, while its privacy FAQ is US English. Labels, available controls, and Parent Dashboard options may differ by Fire OS version and geography; Amazon’s cited documentation does not provide a model-by-model compatibility matrix. If a label in these steps is missing, look for the corresponding Silk or profile control in your tablet’s current settings.
