When a Node.js health API returns HTTP 429, pause for the server’s valid Retry-After guidance or documented equivalent. If it supplies no usable timing, retry with bounded exponential backoff and jitter, stopping at a configured attempt limit or notification deadline. Keep health-check results separate from evidence that a reward, invitation, or receipt reached its recipient: a successful health response is only a point-in-time signal about the endpoint.
What does a successful health check prove?
A 200 response indicates that the endpoint answered successfully at the time of the check. It does not prove that any specific notification cohort was delivered. Track the two outcomes separately: endpoint availability and notification delivery. Preserve delivery attempts, retries, and recipient-level outcomes in the notification workflow rather than inferring them from health status. The gaming notification scenario illustrates this distinction.
How should a health monitoring API handle polling rate limits?
Model each polling window as a bounded state machine. A successful response ends that attempt. On 429 Too Many Requests, use valid server-directed timing first. MDN notes that a Retry-After header may tell a client how long to wait before making the request again (MDN: 429 Too Many Requests). Some APIs document another equivalent; Discord, for example, documents a JSON retry_after value for its API (Discord rate limits).
When the response has no usable retry timing, use an increasing delay with jitter, then stop when either the attempt budget or the overall deadline is reached. Jitter helps prevent multiple workers from retrying in synchronized bursts. Set the attempt limit, delay bounds, and elapsed-time budget from the actual upstream contract and the notification deadline; there is no universal correct retry count.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Classify failures before retrying
- Successful response: Record the health result and end the current attempt.
- HTTP 429: Honor valid server timing; otherwise apply bounded backoff with jitter.
- Transport failures or server errors: Retry only as allowed by the upstream service’s contract and within the configured budget.
- Other 4xx responses: Classify them rather than retrying blindly; many indicate a permanent client or authentication problem.
Node.js provides HTTP facilities and timeout controls, but those runtime features do not define a polling policy. Validate status handling, timeouts, rate limits, authentication requirements, and retry semantics against the specific API you call. Node.js HTTP documentation describes the runtime’s HTTP API, not a universal retry strategy.
How can you prevent duplicate or conflicting polling records?
Give each polling window a deterministic identity and prevent a scheduler from starting another attempt for that window while a worker still owns it. Append attempt records instead of replacing the window’s history with only the final health value. For each attempt, retain the attempt number, response status, selected delay, and bounded response evidence.

Make alert and incident-transition writes idempotent so that repeated reads do not create contradictory duplicate outcomes. This protects your own records and alerts; it does not make a remote HTTP read happen exactly once.
- Keep individual window IDs and response fragments in logs or event records, not high-cardinality metric labels.
- Limit stored response-body size and exclude secrets and personal data.
- Retain delivery and retry evidence separately from health-poll evidence.
Should you poll, or use webhooks or subscriptions?
If the upstream service offers event subscriptions or webhooks, assess whether they can replace frequent polling. GitHub recommends subscribing to webhook events instead of polling its API for data (GitHub REST API best practices). Google Health’s subscription guidance describes acknowledging notifications promptly and processing them asynchronously (Google Health notifications). These are platform-specific examples, not evidence that a gaming API supports either mechanism.

Webhook delivery also needs its own durable processing and recovery design. A subscription can reduce polling pressure, but do not treat the existence of webhook guidance from another platform as proof of delivery guarantees or capabilities in your upstream service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you confirm before choosing retry limits?
- Which rate-limit headers, response fields, and retry instructions the actual API documents.
- Whether retry timing is an HTTP header, a response-body value, or another documented mechanism.
- Which transport errors and server responses are safe to retry, and which client errors are permanent.
- How the attempt limit and total retry time fit the notification’s delivery deadline.
- Whether a worker lock or equivalent prevents overlapping attempts for the same polling window.
- Whether the service supports webhooks or subscriptions, and what acknowledgement and recovery behavior it specifies.
The gaming platform is not identified here, so its specific rate limits, headers, webhook support, and notification-delivery guarantees cannot be stated. Verify those details in the provider’s current documentation rather than applying GitHub’s or Discord’s rules to a different API.
