PC screen resolution is the number of pixels a display uses, written as width × height. A resolution of 1920 × 1080 means 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels down. Microsoft summarizes it this way: “Resolution measures how many pixels are on your screen.” Microsoft Support
How to read a resolution
The first number is the horizontal pixel count; the second is the vertical count. A 1920 × 1080 display has 2,073,600 pixels in its full image. Microsoft identifies 1920 × 1080 as Full HD (FHD), and 3840 × 2160 as 4K or Ultra HD in its consumer guidance. Microsoft Support
Resolution describes pixel dimensions, not the monitor’s physical size. Two screens can both be 1920 × 1080 while having different diagonal measurements.
Resolution, aspect ratio, size, and pixel density
- Aspect ratio is the proportion between width and height. The 1920 × 1080 dimensions reduce to 16:9. Other pixel dimensions can also use a 16:9 ratio.
- Pixel density describes how closely packed the pixels are over a physical distance. It depends on both resolution and screen size, so resolution alone does not establish how sharp a display will look from a given distance.
- Physical screen size is usually given as a diagonal measurement. A larger screen with the same pixel dimensions has larger pixels and lower pixel density.
What native resolution means
A display’s native resolution is its intended pixel mode. Windows uses native resolution when calculating DPI scaling and selecting the default display mode. Microsoft Learn

Running a display at a lower resolution can be useful for compatibility or performance, but the result varies by display. Microsoft warns that text may look less sharp and that the picture may appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. Microsoft Support
Why Windows scaling changes what fits on screen
Pixel resolution is not the same as the apparent size of text, icons, and app controls. Windows scaling enlarges or reduces interface elements, so the usable workspace for apps may differ from the panel’s physical pixel grid. How to check or change resolution in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one display is connected, select the display you want to adjust.
- Under Display resolution, choose the mode you want. Windows marks the recommended mode, which is generally the display’s native resolution.
- Apply the change and check whether text and the picture look right. If not, return to the recommended resolution. Microsoft’s guidance notes that a mode below native can reduce text sharpness or alter how the image is positioned or scaled. Microsoft Support
How to compare resolutions
When comparing displays, consider more than the resolution label:
- Check the actual native pixel dimensions.
- Compare physical screen size as well, because it affects pixel density.
- Check aspect ratio if you need a particular screen shape or layout.
- Consider your Windows scaling preference and how much app workspace you need.
- For gaming or video, also consider refresh rate and whether your computer can drive the chosen mode.
Resolution labels are shorthand, not a universal quality ranking. Microsoft uses 3840 × 2160 for 4K/Ultra HD in consumer guidance; naming can vary in other contexts. Microsoft Support The resolution that suits you depends on screen size, viewing distance, workload, and hardware.
