You can run an open-weight AI model on hardware you control and use a self-hosted chat interface instead of sending each prompt to a hosted inference API. A practical starter setup is Ollama for running the model and Open WebUI for chatting with it. That can remove hosted inference charges for the work you move to your machine, but it is not automatically 100% private or cost-free: endpoint choices, integrations, network exposure, hardware, electricity, storage, and maintenance still matter.

What a local AI stack does—and what it does not

A local stack separates the chat screen from the service that generates answers. Open WebUI is the interface; a model runtime such as Ollama loads and runs the model. Open WebUI can also connect to other compatible services, including llama.cpp, vLLM, and hosted endpoints. Its documentation puts the key distinction plainly: “The selected endpoint determines where inference happens.” Open WebUI’s provider documentation

If a conversation uses a model hosted by a provider, the prompt and the context included with it go to that provider. If it uses a model running locally, the request can stay on your machine. But a local chat model does not automatically make web search, cloud tools, document extraction, embeddings, or other configured services local. Check each enabled component and the endpoint it uses.

Ollama says, “We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally.” That is a statement from the service provider’s FAQ, not an independent security audit. It applies to local inference, not to every application or integration in a stack. Ollama FAQ

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a workload before choosing hardware

Start with the jobs you actually expect to do. A model that is adequate for occasional drafting may not suit long-document question answering, coding, or several people making requests at once. The sources do not establish one model-and-computer pairing that works for everyone, so verify the current model requirements and runtime compatibility before buying hardware.

  • Occasional drafting or personal chat: prioritize a model and setup that fit the computer you already have; accept slower responses if speed is not critical.
  • Private document Q&A: consider both the model’s memory needs and the context length required for the material. Confirm that document parsing and embedding services also run locally if keeping documents on your machine is important.
  • Coding or demanding tasks: evaluate candidate models on your own representative prompts. The available sources contain no head-to-head evidence that establishes local-model parity with premium hosted systems.
  • Multiple concurrent users or high throughput: plan for a different serving workload from a single-user desktop. Open WebUI lists vLLM as one local-server option for high-throughput use, but no comparative performance figures are established here.

Model size, quantization, context length, available VRAM and system RAM, GPU compatibility, and other software running at the same time all affect fit. More context consumes more VRAM and RAM. Treat GPU, RAM, and SSD purchases as workload-driven upgrades, not prerequisites that every user needs. Open WebUI’s context guide and Ollama’s GPU compatibility information

Install Ollama and connect Open WebUI

The following is one starter architecture, not the only way to self-host. Check each project’s current installation steps for your operating system and hardware before proceeding.

  1. Install Ollama using its official instructions, then choose a model compatible with your machine. The Ollama FAQ covers local operation and configuration. Ollama FAQ
  2. Install Open WebUI using its quick-start guide. For a container deployment, follow the documented container command and keep its data volume persistent so its stored application data survives container replacement. The guide also documents a secret-key setting; use the current instructions for the deployment method you choose. Open WebUI quick start
  3. Connect the interface to the local runtime. Configure Open WebUI to use the Ollama endpoint, then select the local model for a conversation. Open WebUI documents its Ollama connection and other provider options. Connect a provider and Starting with Open WebUI
  4. Verify the route and integrations. Confirm that the selected model is the local Ollama model, and inspect any enabled search, tools, document processing, or embedding features for separate services they call.
  5. Keep GPU configuration components distinct. Open WebUI’s CUDA image can accelerate its own embedding, reranking, and speech components. It does not automatically grant GPU access to a separate Ollama container; configure GPU access for the relevant container as required by the deployment guide. Open WebUI quick start

Make privacy a configuration, not a label

For an ordinary local setup, Ollama’s server binds to 127.0.0.1:11434 by default, keeping it on the local machine. Changing its bind setting can make the service reachable over a network. Do that only when remote access is needed and you have deliberately secured the exposure. Ollama FAQ

If you want Ollama to operate without its cloud features, use the local-only option documented by Ollama. Disabling those features also removes access to Ollama’s cloud models and web search; it is not a setting that turns every third-party integration in Open WebUI into a local service. Ollama FAQ

  • Choose a local endpoint for conversations intended to stay on your machine.
  • Review which tools and services receive prompts, retrieved text, or uploaded documents.
  • Keep local services on loopback unless you intentionally need network access.
  • Check the privacy and network behavior of the interface, runtime, and any additional service separately.

Set context length with memory in mind

Longer context lets a model process more material in a request, but it uses more memory. Open WebUI’s guide reports these defaults for Ollama v0.15.5, selected according to available VRAM:

Compare local and hosted use by the trade-off that matters

Consideration Local inference Hosted inference
Where prompts go To the selected local endpoint, assuming the model and supporting services are also local To the selected provider, along with included prompt context
Charges and resources Can avoid per-request hosted inference charges for work moved locally; you provide hardware, power, storage, and maintenance Uses the provider’s infrastructure and may incur service charges; no local inference machine is required
Capability Depends on the chosen model and task; assess it on your actual work Depends on the chosen hosted model and service
Operations You manage installation, updates, access, and availability The provider manages the inference infrastructure

There is no established universal break-even cost or comparable capability benchmark here. Ollama’s local runtime and its hosted plans are distinct options, so check which one you are using rather than treating every Ollama model or feature as local. Ollama pricing
