Kindle Cloud Reader is Amazon’s former name for Kindle for Web, a browser-based way to read Kindle books on a desktop or mobile device. You can use it with an Amazon account without owning a Kindle e-reader, but not every Kindle title is available in the web reader.
What is Kindle Cloud Reader?
Amazon now calls the service Kindle for Web. Its help page describes it this way: “Kindle for Web lets you read your Kindle books on your mobile or desktop browser.” Amazon’s Kindle for Web help page explains the current service, while Amazon’s Kindle page notes that Kindle Cloud Reader is now known as Kindle for Web.
In practical terms, it gives you a browser-based route to your Kindle library. You do not need a Kindle e-reader to read a supported book this way; an Amazon account is used to access the reader and library.
What can you do in Kindle for Web?
Amazon advertises reading controls and study tools, including adjustments to text size, font, margins, and background color, along with notes, highlights, in-book search, and dictionary lookup. The available features can differ by book and format, so these are not guarantees that every tool works with every title.

Amazon’s Kindle format guide compares support across reading experiences and formats. Its examples show that functions such as text selection, dictionary use, custom fonts, or screen-reader support may be unavailable in some fixed-layout cases.
What devices and browsers does it support?
Amazon lists the following minimum browser versions and mobile operating systems for Kindle for Web. Requirements can change, so check Amazon’s current help page if your browser or device does not work.

What if a Kindle book will not open in the browser?
Not all Kindle titles are available to read with Kindle for Web. If a book is not supported there, Amazon identifies the Kindle app or a Kindle e-reader as alternatives. A physical Kindle is optional for browser reading, not a prerequisite; Amazon’s help page is the place to check the current availability guidance.

The browser reader is useful when you want to access a supported Kindle book from a desktop or mobile browser without buying a dedicated reading device. A Kindle e-reader is a separate, optional way to read; whether it is the better choice depends on where you prefer to read and whether your particular title and desired features work in the browser. Amazon’s device and title guidance can help identify alternatives, but does not establish a particular model recommendation.
