Live streaming games means playing a video game while broadcasting your gameplay over the internet so other people can watch in real time. Viewers may also interact through live chat; showing your face on camera is optional.
What does live streaming games mean?
A player runs a game on a PC or console and sends a live broadcast to an online platform. The platform delivers that broadcast to viewers as the gameplay happens. Epic Games defines game streaming as playing on a PC or console while broadcasting to a streaming platform of your choice in its beginner’s guide to live streaming.
The broadcast can include game audio, the player’s voice, and optionally a webcam view. If chat is available and enabled, viewers can respond while the streamer plays. A webcam and live chat are common features, not requirements for broadcasting gameplay.
How does a live game stream work?
- Choose the gameplay source: Play on a gaming PC or console.
- Choose a broadcast route: Use streaming software on a PC or a console’s built-in broadcast feature when available.
- Configure the stream: Select the platform and set up the gameplay image, audio, and any optional microphone or camera.
- Preview and go live: Check the broadcast output, then start sending it to the platform.
- Interact and review: Respond to viewers if you choose, then review the broadcast afterward if the platform makes it available.
That sequence reflects the workflow in Epic Games’ guide, which covers selecting a platform, setting up game and streaming software, configuring sources and audio, previewing, broadcasting, engaging with viewers, and reviewing the stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live game streaming versus cloud gaming
These phrases can sound similar but describe different activities. Live streaming games usually means broadcasting your own gameplay to an audience. Cloud gaming means playing a game delivered to your device from a remote service. In one case, you send gameplay out for others to watch; in the other, a service sends game content to you to play.
What equipment do you need?
There is no single equipment list for every streamer. The PC or console runs the game; other equipment depends on how you want to broadcast and how much control you need.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Microphone or headset: Optional for adding commentary. A headset with an integrated microphone or a stand-alone microphone can provide voice audio, as described in Intel’s live-streaming guide.
- Webcam: Optional if you want viewers to see your face as well as the gameplay.
- Capture card: May be used in some console setups to route gameplay through streaming software for additional customization. It is not a universal requirement; direct console broadcasting may be an alternative.
- Streaming software: Used in many PC workflows to select and configure the broadcast’s sources and audio. Some consoles also provide a built-in broadcast route.
The right setup depends on the device, platform, and desired level of customization; none of these optional accessories is necessary to understand what live game streaming means.
How can you stream gameplay from a console?
Some consoles offer a built-in broadcast feature, while other workflows use streaming software and, in some cases, a capture card. For example, Xbox Wire documented an Xbox-to-Twitch route in February 2022: link a Twitch account, connect a headset or webcam if desired, set broadcast options such as audio and resolution, and go live. The guide says viewers can watch from devices that access Twitch. Because those directions are dated, consult current Xbox and Twitch help for the present interface and options.

No. The term describes broadcasting gameplay, not a particular business model or outcome. A stream may have viewers and chat without generating income, and the definition itself says nothing about audience size or growth.
