Not necessarily. Enrolling several fingers can make your phone easier to unlock from different hand positions, but there is no evidence here that it makes a current consumer phone harder for an attacker to unlock. Multiple enrolled fingers are still the same biometric method—not multiple authentication factors. Your phone’s sensor, matching system, attack defenses, passcode and software updates matter more to security.

What adding fingerprints changes—and what it does not

Adding another fingerprint gives the phone another biometric sample it may accept as yours. Depending on the device and its instructions, this can help when you hold the phone in another hand, use a different grip, or cannot use one enrolled finger. It may improve access convenience; that is different from improving resistance to unauthorized access.

Multiple enrolled fingers do not constitute multiple factors. They are all “something you are”—biometric evidence—rather than a combination of independent factors such as a biometric and a device or passcode. The material available here does not establish that enabling more stored fingerprints lowers the chance of someone else unlocking a current consumer smartphone.

What NIST’s multi-finger study actually measured

NIST’s 2019 study examined contactless fingerprint identification, not the security of unlocking consumer phones. It compared contactless images with contact fingerprint records. NIST’s May 2020 summary says the study involved 200 volunteers and six contactless technologies—four smartphone-based apps and two standalone devices—alongside two contact devices for comparison. The devices reflected the state of the art when data was collected in May 2019, not a current phone lineup.

Study result reported by NIST in 2020 What it describes
60%–70% accuracy Reported for single-finger scans using the tested contactless devices.
95% accuracy One mobile app’s reported result with various multiple-finger combinations.
Close to 90% accuracy Reported for other tested contactless devices with various multiple-finger combinations.
Generally better than 99.5% match accuracy Reported for the contact devices used for comparison.

These figures describe the study’s contactless matching task and comparison devices; they are not phone-unlock success rates, false-acceptance rates for today’s phones, or evidence that enrolling more prints secures a phone. NIST’s report author John Libert said, “Our data suggest that multiple finger matching can substantially improve the accuracy of contactless fingerprint matching.” That finding should stay within its stated scope.

Why a fingerprint match is not a guarantee

Biometric readings vary from one capture to another. As a result, a system can falsely match someone who is not enrolled or fail to match the enrolled user. NIST calls these false-match and false-non-match possibilities. A fingerprint also is not a secret: latent prints may be recovered from objects a person has touched. A stored fingerprint is therefore different from a passcode that can be kept private and changed.

NIST’s current SP 800-63B Revision 4 says, within the guidance’s scope, “Biometrics SHALL only be used as part of multi-factor authentication with a physical authenticator (i.e., ‘something you have’).” It also says, “An alternative non-biometric authentication option SHALL always be provided to the subscriber.” These are requirements in NIST’s digital identity guidance, not a certification or description of every consumer phone.

What determines fingerprint security on a phone

Enrolling extra fingers cannot compensate for weaknesses elsewhere in the authentication system. The device’s sensor and matching threshold, resistance to presentation attacks, protection of biometric templates, and overall device security all affect the result. NIST recommends presentation-attack detection (PAD) for fingerprint systems and provides testing and performance guidance; the guidance does not establish a head-to-head ranking of current phone models.

A historical example shows why implementation matters. A June 2021 draft NIST report recounted reports that certain screen protectors on the Galaxy S10 caused its ultrasonic reader to detect protector patterns during fingerprint enrollment, after which non-enrolled fingers were reportedly accepted. Samsung patched the issue and advised users to delete and re-enroll fingerprints. This was a model- and accessory-specific incident, not evidence that current phones share the flaw.

Make fingerprint unlock practical without neglecting fallback

  • Follow your phone maker’s current instructions. Enrollment limits and steps vary by device; the available sources do not establish the current steps for any particular model.
  • Keep a usable non-biometric fallback. You may need it if your finger is wet, dry, dirty or injured, or if capture otherwise fails. NIST notes that moisture can affect capture and that remembering which fingers were enrolled can also be a usability challenge.
  • Protect your passcode. Keep it private, use the device maker’s security guidance, and make sure you can recover access without relying on a fingerprint that may not work in every condition.
  • Install the manufacturer’s security updates. Follow device-specific advice about sensors and accessories; the Galaxy S10 example is a reason to heed relevant updates, not to assume a general defect.

How to compare phone unlock methods

There is no established overall winner among current phone models in the evidence cited here. When assessing a device’s unlock options, consider the system as a whole rather than counting enrolled fingers:

  • False acceptance and attack resistance: What does the manufacturer say about matching and protection against presentation attacks?
  • Everyday reliability: How does the method work when the finger is wet, dry, dirty or injured?
  • User intent: Does the method require an action that indicates you intend to unlock the phone?
  • Fallback and recovery: Is there a non-biometric option you can use and remember?
  • Biometric privacy: How does the device protect fingerprint templates?

NIST discusses security and usability considerations across fingerprint, face and iris biometrics, but those considerations do not amount to a current model-by-model comparison. Judge a specific phone using its manufacturer’s current documentation rather than assuming that more stored prints—or one biometric category—automatically means stronger security.
