ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR significa que falló la negociación SSL/TLS entre el navegador y el sitio. No identifica por sí solo la causa: puede estar en el sitio, la red o el dispositivo. Prueba estos tres pasos para localizar el problema; no son una garantía de que puedas corregirlo desde tu equipo.
1. Averigua si el problema es del sitio o de tu conexión
En Chrome, el error puede aparecer junto a “This site can’t provide a secure connection”. Primero comprueba si ocurre solo en una página o también en otros sitios seguros.
- Solo falla un sitio: es más probable que necesite revisión el sitio o la ruta de conexión hacia él.
- Fallan varios sitios: revisa la red y el dispositivo antes de concluir que cada sitio tiene un problema propio.
- El error aparece y desaparece: anota cuándo sucede; los fallos intermitentes pueden apuntar a diferencias de red o compatibilidad.
Prueba la misma página en otra conexión, por ejemplo, datos móviles en lugar de Wi-Fi. Si usas una VPN, observa si el resultado cambia al conectarte o desconectarte. Estas comparaciones ayudan a aislar una interferencia de la red local o del proveedor, pero no prueban por sí solas cuál es la causa. Cloudflare recomienda comparar redes y VPN al diagnosticar este error.
2. Revisa extensiones, antivirus y configuración de red
Si el cambio de red no resuelve el error, comprueba si algo en tu dispositivo está interceptando o modificando la conexión segura.

- Prueba en una ventana de incógnito o desactiva temporalmente las extensiones del navegador para comprobar si alguna influye.
- Revisa si el antivirus tiene funciones llamadas “HTTPS protection” o “HTTPS scanning”. La inspección HTTPS puede interferir con la conexión de Chrome. Si haces una prueba desactivándola, vuelve a activarla inmediatamente después.
- Si estás en una red corporativa, un proxy o una VPN, consulta con quien administre esa conexión antes de cambiar ajustes.
- Comprueba que la fecha y la hora del dispositivo sean correctas; Google incluye la hora del dispositivo entre las posibles causas de errores de conexión.
La ayuda de Chrome también señala que extensiones, software de seguridad que inspecciona HTTPS y la configuración del servidor pueden estar implicados. No ignores advertencias de certificados ni dejes desactivada una protección como solución permanente.
3. Pide ayuda al responsable adecuado
Si el error continúa en varias redes, afecta a otros visitantes o solo puedes reproducirlo en un sitio concreto, la siguiente revisión corresponde al administrador del sitio o de la red. El fallo ocurre durante la negociación SSL/TLS y puede deberse, entre otras cosas, a la activación o cobertura del certificado, a cifrados incompatibles o a la compatibilidad con protocolos de conexión.

Contacta al propietario del sitio y comparte el texto y código exactos del error, la dirección de la página, el navegador y sistema operativo, y si estabas usando VPN, proxy o una red corporativa. Indica también si el problema se reproduce en otra red y si otros sitios funcionan. Chrome recomienda contactar al propietario cuando el error seguro procede del sitio.
Si administras el sitio
Revisa que el certificado esté activo y cubra exactamente el hostname solicitado —incluidos los subdominios— y comprueba la configuración TLS, los cifrados y cualquier CDN o proxy intermedio. Cloudflare enumera estos elementos entre las causas posibles de ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

Si el fallo es intermitente o se limita a ciertas redes o dispositivos, investiga por separado la compatibilidad con HTTP/3/QUIC: algunos intermediarios o redes pueden gestionar mal UDP. En un entorno administrado, una prueba temporal de HTTP/3 puede ayudar a aislar esa hipótesis. Para redes corporativas o antivirus que inspeccionan el tráfico, Cloudflare también plantea probar temporalmente TLS 1.3; desactivarlo reduce la seguridad para todos los visitantes, así que no debe dejarse deshabilitado como arreglo permanente.
Para investigar, registra el mensaje y código exactos, el navegador y sistema operativo, el software de seguridad utilizado, la presencia de VPN o proxy, el tipo de red y los datos diagnósticos disponibles de Cloudflare. El error indica un fallo del handshake SSL/TLS, no cuál de esos componentes lo provocó.

Qué significa el error y qué no significa
SSL/TLS es el protocolo que permite que el navegador y el sitio acuerden cómo establecer una conexión cifrada. Cuando ese intercambio falla, Chrome puede mostrar ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. El mensaje no significa necesariamente que el sitio sea malicioso, ni que haya una única corrección local: el origen puede estar en el certificado, la configuración del servidor, la red o un dispositivo intermedio. La guía técnica de Cloudflare sobre el error describe estas causas como posibilidades que requieren diagnóstico.
