To stop sending the same data on every request, set an explicit cache policy on each response: let versioned files stay fresh, store stable pages for revalidation, and keep personalized responses out of shared caches. Fresh cache hits avoid a request to the origin; when a stored response is stale, validators such as ETag can let the client check for changes without downloading an unchanged body.
How HTTP caching reduces repeat work
HTTP responses can be stored by a browser or by an intermediary shared cache, such as a proxy or CDN. When a suitable stored response is still fresh, a cache can reuse it instead of requesting the representation from the origin server. That can avoid repeated transfers and origin work, but the size of the benefit depends on your traffic and policy; there is no universal performance percentage.
When a stored response is no longer fresh, a cache generally needs to validate it before reuse. The origin can confirm that it has not changed, allowing the cached body to be used, or return a new representation. RFC 9111 says a cache must not generate a stale response unless it is disconnected or stale use is explicitly permitted by the client or origin server. RFC 9111: HTTP Caching
Choose a Cache-Control policy
The response’s Cache-Control header communicates how caches should store and reuse it. Pick directives according to how quickly the content changes and who is allowed to see it—not as a blanket switch for all responses. MDN’s Cache-Control reference

| Directive or policy | What it means | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
max-age=<seconds> |
Sets a freshness lifetime; a response can be reused while fresh under the applicable HTTP rules. | Content whose URL and update strategy make that lifetime safe. |
no-cache |
Allows storage, but requires successful revalidation before a stored response is reused. | Stable URLs that should be checked for updates, such as non-personalized HTML. |
no-store |
Directs caches not to store the response. | Responses that should not be retained by caches. |
private |
Restricts storage to private caches rather than shared caches. | User-specific responses that may be stored in that user’s browser cache. |
no-cache does not mean “do not store”; no-store is the directive intended to prevent storage. For personalized content, use private when browser storage is appropriate, and ensure shared caches cannot serve one user’s response to another. A response that should not be stored at all needs a policy that prevents storage, not merely a demand for revalidation. See MDN’s HTTP caching guide for practical patterns.
Use validators to avoid retransmitting unchanged bodies
A server can include an ETag or Last-Modified validator with a response. After the stored response becomes stale, a client or cache can send a conditional request with If-None-Match or If-Modified-Since. If the selected representation is unchanged, the server can reply 304 Not Modified; the cache keeps its stored body and updates the response metadata. If the representation changed, the server returns the new representation.

- Send a representation and validator. Include an
ETag, aLast-Modifieddate, or both with the response. - Let the response become stale. The cache must validate before reuse when the policy requires it.
- Make a conditional request. The client or cache sends the validator in
If-None-MatchorIf-Modified-Since. - Return the appropriate result. Send
304 Not Modifiedif unchanged, or the new representation if it changed.
When a request includes both validators, RFC 9111 gives If-None-Match precedence over If-Modified-Since for validation. Validators are useful when the server can check whether a representation changed cheaply; a validation still involves a request even when the body is not retransmitted. MDN: Conditional requests and MDN: ETag explain the related headers.
Match the policy to the URL and content
Fingerprint static assets for long freshness
For files such as app.7f3a2.js or styles.a1b2.css, the URL can include a content fingerprint. If content changes, publish it under a new URL and update the HTML or manifest that refers to it. That makes a long freshness lifetime practical: clients requesting the old URL still receive the old, unchanged asset, while updated pages point to the new one.

Web.dev gives Cache-Control: max-age=31536000 as a one-year example for fingerprinted resources. It is an example policy, not a universal requirement or a measured performance result. Do not apply the same long-lived policy to a stable URL whose contents can change in place. web.dev: Prevent unnecessary network requests with the HTTP Cache
Revalidate stable HTML and frequently updated resources
A stable HTML or API URL can remain cacheable without being reused blindly. For non-personalized HTML that should be checked before reuse, Cache-Control: no-cache with validators allows a stored copy to be revalidated; an unchanged page can avoid retransmitting its body. For personalized HTML or API data, choose a policy and cache scope that prevent a shared cache from exposing one user’s representation to another.

Keep shared caches and CDNs in view
HTTP defines cache directives and validation behavior, but a CDN or reverse proxy adds a configured layer. Provider defaults, explicit edge rules, cache keys, and transformations can affect whether a response is cached and how validators behave. A CDN is not proof that your origin’s intended policy is being followed.
Cloudflare, for example, documents product-specific default cache behavior and ETag handling, including cases where response transformations affect weak ETags. Those details describe Cloudflare, not every CDN. Check the rules and response headers for the provider and deployment you actually use: Cloudflare Default Cache Behavior and Using ETag Headers with Cloudflare.

Verify the behavior in your deployment
- Inspect response headers for
Cache-Control, validators, and any CDN cache-status information your provider exposes. - Request the same resource again while it should be fresh; confirm whether the browser or shared cache reuses it.
- Allow a response to become stale and check whether the client or cache sends a conditional request and receives
304 Not Modifiedwhen appropriate. - Review the cache key and privacy scope, especially for responses that vary by user, cookie, or other request data.
- Check CDN defaults and explicit rules separately from origin headers, and confirm that the observed behavior matches the policy you intend.
