“Intelligent” and “smart” often mean much the same thing when describing a person. The difference is usually one of emphasis: “intelligent” is the more general, neutral term and can highlight reasoning through new problems; “smart” can suggest quick thinking or practical savvy. These are common shades of meaning, not fixed rules.

How are “intelligent” and “smart” different?

Both words can describe someone with strong mental ability, and many sentences work with either one. Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries describes “intelligent” as the most general term among “intelligent,” “clever,” “brilliant,” “smart,” and “bright.” The American Heritage Dictionary associates “intelligent” with coping with new problems and using reasoning and inference effectively.

“Smart” often puts more emphasis on quickness or the ability to handle practical matters. The American Heritage Dictionary says it can suggest quick intelligence and a ready ability to look after one’s own interests. That distinction is a useful guide to connotation, not a universal dividing line: “smart” does not always mean practical, and “intelligent” does not mean only academic ability.

Word Common emphasis Example
Intelligent General mental ability, reasoning, and handling new problems “She found an intelligent solution to an unfamiliar problem.”
Smart Quick intelligence or practical savvy; the intended sense depends on context “It was smart to save a copy before editing the file.”

When should you use each word?

Use “intelligent” for a broad or neutral description

Choose “intelligent” when you mean that someone can reason, learn, or deal effectively with unfamiliar challenges, without adding a strong implication of quickness or savvy. For example: “The team designed an intelligent way to diagnose the fault.”

Use “smart” when you mean quick or practically capable

Check for other meanings

“Smart” has meanings unrelated to mental ability. It can describe a stylish appearance (“a smart jacket”) or a cheeky manner (“a smart reply”). As a verb, “to smart” can mean to feel pain or sting. The surrounding words make the intended meaning clear.

Why does “smart” have several meanings?

The word’s history reflects its range. Dictionary.com traces older senses such as “quick, prompt, sharp.” The Online Etymology Dictionary records human-related senses including “quick, active, intelligent, clever” from the 1620s, and a device-related sense of behaving as though guided by intelligence attested from 1972. These are recorded attestations, not dates when the meanings necessarily began.

In technology, “smart” can appear in phrases such as “smart device.” That usage does not make “smart” a synonym for “intelligent” in every setting; it is a context-specific sense of the word.
