There is no verified “best VPN app” for a smart fridge. The available manufacturer information does not establish that refrigerators can run VPN clients directly. If you want a fridge’s internet traffic to use a VPN, the practical place to investigate is your home router or gateway—then confirm the particular fridge’s services still work through that setup.

Can you install a VPN directly on a smart fridge?

Not on the evidence available here. The manufacturer example reviewed, GE Appliances’ Smart Refrigerators page, describes Wi-Fi and SmartHQ app connectivity for some models; it does not claim VPN-client support. Some GE models include Wi-Fi, while others require a separately sold Connect Module. That page cannot establish what every GE model—or any other brand’s model—supports, so check the exact model documentation before assuming compatibility.

A VPN service’s phone or computer app is not automatically installable on an appliance. A fridge connected to Wi-Fi sends its traffic through the home network; whether that traffic enters a VPN depends on how the router or gateway is configured.

How can you route a smart fridge through a VPN?

Start with the router, not the refrigerator. NIST’s consumer-router guidance, IR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, notes that smart-home IoT devices often rely on home routers for internet connectivity. That makes the router the relevant place to investigate network-level routing, but neither NIST nor the other cited guidance certifies a particular fridge-and-router configuration.

  1. Identify the appliance and its network needs. Find the fridge’s exact model and its manufacturer instructions. List the functions you use, such as app connectivity, remote controls, or alerts, so you can check them after changing network routing.
  2. Check the router or gateway documentation. Verify that it supports VPN-client operation—not just a VPN server—and find which protocols and configuration methods it supports. Confirm whether it can send only selected devices or a dedicated IoT network through the tunnel. Do not infer these capabilities from the phrase “VPN router” alone.
  3. Check the VPN service’s router instructions. Make sure its current setup guidance matches the router’s supported configuration. The available sources do not identify or test a specific VPN provider, router, or refrigerator combination.
  4. Configure the intended route, then test the fridge. If the router supports per-device or per-network routing, direct only the intended device or IoT network through the VPN. Check SmartHQ or the relevant manufacturer app, alerts, and remote controls. If a function fails, restore the previous routing and consult the router and appliance documentation before trying a different configuration.

A VPN gateway also needs secure setup and maintenance. CISA’s guidance on visibility and hardening for communications infrastructure addresses VPN-gateway hardening and network segmentation; it does not endorse a consumer router or a particular fridge configuration.

Does a VPN on your phone cover your fridge?

No—not when the phone and fridge are independently connected to the home network. A VPN app on your phone routes the phone’s traffic; it does not, by itself, change how the router sends traffic from a separately connected appliance. To cover the fridge, investigate routing at the router or gateway.

What a VPN can—and cannot—do for fridge security

A VPN can change the network path used by traffic that is actually routed through it. That alone does not show that the fridge is patched, its account is protected, or all of its traffic enters the tunnel. Nor does it establish that manufacturer app features will continue to work.

Treat VPN routing as one network choice, not a complete IoT security plan. The FTC’s home internet-device security guidance recommends changing default router credentials, enabling encryption, and checking for updates. Apply available software updates to the router and appliance, and use non-default credentials where supported.

For another kind of network control, NIST’s SP 1800-15 describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), which can allow an IoT device the communications needed for its intended function while blocking other communications. That is a distinct approach from routing traffic through a VPN; availability depends on the network equipment and implementation.

What to compare before choosing a router VPN setup

There is not enough model-specific evidence here to rank a “best” router, VPN provider, or fridge setup. Compare the documentation for the equipment you actually own or plan to use:

  • VPN-client support: Confirm client mode and supported protocols or configuration methods in the router’s current documentation.
  • Routing controls: Check whether the router can route just the fridge or a dedicated IoT network through the tunnel, rather than forcing every household device onto the same route.
  • Appliance compatibility: Verify that the fridge’s app, alerts, remote controls, and required manufacturer services work with the proposed network configuration.
  • Router security: Consider its update policy and security controls as well as VPN features.
  • Maintenance burden: Account for setup, troubleshooting, and keeping both router and appliance software current.
  • Your actual goal: Privacy from your local network or internet provider, access through a region-specific endpoint, and limiting an appliance’s communications are different goals; a VPN does not serve as a substitute for device-level controls.

Practical verdict

For a smart fridge, look for a compatible router or gateway configuration rather than assuming the appliance can run a VPN app. Verify the exact model, router client and routing features, and VPN instructions; then test the manufacturer services you rely on. Pair any VPN routing with routine router and appliance security measures.
