An optical network terminal (ONT) is the customer-side device that connects a fiber-optic internet line to equipment in a home or business. It terminates the provider’s optical network at the subscriber end and presents an interface for customer equipment, such as a router. The ONT is active network equipment—not simply a fiber connector or the Wi-Fi router.

What an ONT does in a fiber network

In a passive optical network (PON), the provider’s optical line termination (OLT) connects toward the provider network. Fiber and passive distribution components carry the connection through the optical distribution network (ODN) to subscriber-side equipment. The ONU or ONT sits at the ODN’s user-side leaf and provides an interface for end-user facilities. ITU-T describes the OLT as terminating the ODN root and the ONU as terminating a leaf (ITU-T G.984.1).

In everyday FTTH (fiber to the home) usage, “ONT” usually means the device at the customer’s premises that converts the provider’s fiber connection into a service interface for customer equipment. Depending on the installation, that interface may connect to a separate router or other equipment. The ONT also participates in network management: GPON has a defined management and control interface between the OLT and ONT (ITU-T G.984.4).

ONT, ONU, OLT, modem, and router: what is the difference?

Term Where it sits What it does
ONT Customer side, at the ODN leaf Common FTTH term for subscriber-side optical equipment that provides a user-facing interface.
ONU At an ODN leaf General standards term for network equipment interfacing the ODN and end-user access facilities; an ONT may be a kind of ONU.
OLT Provider side, at the ODN root Terminates the optical distribution network toward the provider’s service network.
Router Usually on the customer side, connected to the ONT or integrated with it Routes traffic between the home network and the internet; Wi-Fi routers also provide wireless access.
Modem Varies by access technology and equipment design Often used informally for the device connecting a home to an internet service. An ONT performs the optical-network termination role, but is not necessarily a cable or DSL modem.

“Modem” is often used as a catch-all for internet equipment, but it does not identify the ONT’s precise role. Some provider equipment combines functions in one enclosure, so check the device’s model and connections rather than assuming every box performs only one job.

ONT vs. ONU: the distinction depends on context

ONT and ONU do not have one universal distinction across standards and operators. ITU-T’s XGS-PON recommendation describes ONU as the general term for the network element interfacing end-user access facilities and the ODN. It notes that ONT has been used for an FTTH ONU with a user-port function, for a single-subscriber ONU, and historically as another name for an ONU. The recommendation advises readers to clarify the term in context (ITU-T G.9807.1).

ITU-T Q.834.1 gives a specific definition: “An ONU used for FTTH and includes the User Port function.” It also notes that some operators combine ONU and network-termination functions in one physical resource called an ONT (ITU-T Q.834.1). In practice, a provider may use either label for equipment serving a single subscriber. Ask the ISP what its label means if you are identifying equipment or checking compatibility.

Where to find the ONT at home

The ONT is typically where the fiber service enters the premises or where the provider has installed the indoor fiber endpoint. Look for a powered device connected to a thin fiber cable and, often, an Ethernet cable leading to a router. It may be mounted on a wall or placed near the router or another network connection point; the exact arrangement varies by installation.

A larger fiber terminal box or enclosure is not necessarily the ONT. A terminal box can contain an ONT alongside power or battery components and separate passive parts such as connectors, splitters, patch panels, or splice trays (ITU-T L.209). The enclosure houses components; it is not synonymous with the active ONT.

Can you replace an ONT?

Do not assume a retail ONT will work just because it supports the same broad fiber technology. The standards define equipment roles and management interfaces; they do not establish compatibility between an arbitrary ONT and a particular ISP’s network. Before buying or replacing one, ask the provider whether the specific model is supported and how it must be provisioned. If the ISP owns or manages the installed ONT, have the provider arrange a replacement.
