Setting a project to 9:16 gives you a portrait canvas; it does not guarantee that every clip fits it well. For a clean reel, choose the delivery shape first, decide clip by clip whether to crop or preserve the full frame, reposition anything important, and inspect the export.
1. Set the project to the shape you intend to publish
For a full-screen vertical reel, start with a 9:16 project or canvas preset. Kapwing lists 9:16 among its vertical presets, and Microsoft Clipchamp lists Portrait 9:16 for formats such as Reels, Stories, and Shorts. Check the editor’s current controls, since project-level ratio settings and labels vary by product.
In Clipchamp, 16:9 is the default project ratio, according to Microsoft Support. Changing the canvas ratio is a starting point, not a fix for every source clip.
2. Add clips, then inspect each one
Bring your footage into the project and check every clip on the portrait canvas. A landscape or square source may show empty borders, lose important edge content, or frame its subject awkwardly when adapted to 9:16. Microsoft specifically advises checking clips after changing the project ratio.

Ask two questions for each shot: must the entire original image remain visible, and can the subject or essential information survive a tighter crop? Make the framing choice separately for each clip rather than applying one treatment blindly to the whole reel.
3. Choose fill or fit for each clip
Fill the portrait canvas
Fill-and-crop enlarges the source until it covers the 9:16 canvas. This avoids padding around the image, but parts of the original frame—often its left and right edges for landscape footage—will be cut off. Use it when the subject remains clear inside the cropped area.

Fit the full frame
Fit-to-center keeps the complete source image visible. If its shape does not match the portrait canvas, the remaining space can be padded with a blurred or colored background. This preserves edge details and context, though the clip will not fill the canvas with the original picture.
Kapwing documents both fill-and-crop and fit-to-center treatments, along with background options and per-clip crop controls in its vertical video editor. The choice is a visual trade-off, not a quality setting: fill uses more of the screen; fit retains more of the source.

4. Reposition the crop and protect important content
After choosing fill, adjust the crop so the relevant subject stays in frame. Centering is not always right: a person may be off-center, a moving subject may shift, or a sign or product detail may sit near an edge. Scrub through the shot to make sure the framing still works over its duration.
Kapwing calls attention to safe zones for faces, subtitles, logos, and calls to action. Clipchamp likewise says to reposition a clip when its automatic fill crop looks wrong. Leave breathing room around faces and keep text or logos away from edges where they could be clipped or obscured by the viewing interface.

5. Assemble, trim, and export in the browser editor
Browser editors differ in where they set the project ratio, how they crop individual clips, what timeline controls they provide, and how they export. Their feature pages document available workflows; they are not independent tests of output quality.

Once the clips are framed and trimmed, use the editor’s export or download control. The cited product documentation describes export actions, but it does not independently establish that every export setting will be accepted by every social platform. After rendering, watch the result rather than relying only on the editor preview.

6. Run a final framing check
- Confirm the project canvas is portrait 9:16.
- Review each clip for unintended borders, clipped subjects, or lost edge details.
- Check faces, subtitles, logos, and other important visual information throughout each shot.
- Verify that transitions and trims do not reveal a framing problem at a clip’s beginning or end.
- Play the exported file from start to finish and confirm it looks as intended.
