Python Easy Chess GUI is a desktop interface for playing chess with, and reviewing games using, a separate chess engine. It supports UCI engines only: the GUI is not itself an engine. You can install an engine from its Engine menu or place a UCI engine in the program’s Engines folder, then assign it a role such as opponent, adviser, analysis, or threat.
What Python Easy Chess GUI does
The program combines a graphical chess board with engine-driven play and analysis. Its documentation lists saving games to repertoire PGN files, opening-book assistance, an engine adviser, and review mode with engine analysis. An opening book in this workflow is a digital file, not a physical chess book.
The engine is a separate program that you select and configure. The project states, “Only UCI engines are supported.” A chess engine that uses another protocol is not documented as compatible.
How to install a UCI engine
There are two documented ways to add an engine:
- Use the GUI: Open Engine → Manage → Install and follow the installation workflow.
- Add an engine yourself: Copy a chosen UCI engine, such as Stockfish, into the project’s Engines directory. On Linux, the manual instructs users to grant execute permission to the engine binary.
After adding an engine, select and configure it in the GUI. The documentation does not provide a complete compatibility list by operating system, processor architecture, or engine build, so check the selected engine’s own requirements and the Python Easy Chess GUI release materials for your platform.

Choose an engine role and configure it
The manual describes four engine roles. They serve different purposes, and the engine’s settings are managed separately from its role assignment.

| Analysis | Use an engine to analyze positions or games. |
| Threat | Use an engine for threat-related assistance. |
To adjust engine options such as Hash or Threads, open Engine → Manage → Edit. Available options can depend on the selected engine; the project’s documentation does not establish one universal set of options for every UCI engine.

Install the GUI: executable or Python source
The README describes both a release executable and running from source. For the source route, it lists Python 3.7 or later, python-chess 0.28.0 or later, FreeSimpleGUI 5.0.0 or later, and Pyperclip. It also instructs source users to download the project files and the Images, Engines, and Book directories. These are the requirements stated in the README surfaced for this article; consult the repository for the instructions applicable to the release you choose, since dependencies and packaged files can change.
The project reports an LGPL-3.0 license. Release archives and included components are version-specific, so do not assume every executable archive contains the same engine or resource folders.

Saving games and reviewing them
Python Easy Chess GUI documents saving games to repertoire PGN files, using opening-book assistance, and replaying games with engine analysis in Review mode. PGN is the game-record format used for saving and replaying chess games. The project’s release notes also refer to Polyglot opening-book files; use the files and setup instructions associated with the version you download.

Start with the official project repository for the README and manual, then use its release page for the available executable and version-specific packaging. The documentation research surfaced a release indexed as v0.76, dated 19 June, but does not establish that it is the latest release on October 5, 2026. Check the release page directly rather than relying on that version as current.

Before installing, confirm that the download matches your operating system and that your chosen engine is a UCI build for your machine. The project materials available here do not establish a full operating-system or architecture compatibility matrix.
