Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn my reported incident, a recursive grep -r search was followed by a 100% CPU reading. GNU grep’s documented behavior makes one cause plausible: when recursion is enabled and no file operand is supplied, GNU grep searches the current working directory. But the exact command, directory tree, operating system, and process-monitor evidence are not available here, so the reading and its cause remain my account—not a verified or repeatable benchmark.
The practical fix is to make search scope explicit. Use a narrow path or exclusions for filesystem searches, use git grep when tracked repository files are the intended target, and consider a Git hook for a narrowly defined automated check. A hook can help prevent an accidental broad search in a configured workflow; it cannot guarantee that a machine will never hit high CPU.
Why can grep -r consume so much CPU?
GNU grep’s -r option recursively reads and processes files beneath each directory operand. If recursion is enabled without a file operand, GNU grep searches the current working directory. That means a command run from a repository root can cover much more than a developer intended, depending on the files and directories there.
Searching more files can require more work, but 100% CPU is not an inherent or inevitable result of grep -r. The available details do not establish my exact invocation, what it traversed, or whether another process contributed to the reading. The useful lesson is to constrain the search rather than treat the CPU figure as a predictable property of grep.

Know the difference between -r and -R
GNU grep documents different symlink behavior for the two options. With -r, it follows symlinks supplied as command-line operands but skips symlinks it encounters while recursing. With -R, it follows all symlinks. If a tree contains links to other directories, choosing -R can therefore change what gets searched.
How to keep a recursive search in bounds
Choose a narrow starting path
Pass the directory or files you actually mean to inspect instead of relying on the current working directory. For example, searching src is more explicit than launching a recursive search from the repository root. Confirm the starting path before running a command that can traverse a tree.
Exclude directories you do not need
GNU grep provides --exclude-dir for excluding directories by glob. For example, this searches beneath src while excluding directories named vendor and build:

grep -r --exclude-dir=vendor --exclude-dir=build 'pattern' src
Adjust the paths and exclusions to match the repository. An exclusion is useful only if its pattern actually matches the directory names in your tree.

Select files explicitly when extensions define the scope
When the intended search is limited to a file type, GNU grep’s manual documents combining find with grep to select files explicitly. That makes the file selection visible in the command, rather than silently searching every file under a broad directory.
When git grep is the better choice
For a search of repository source, git grep may be a better fit than a filesystem-wide recursive search. By default, it searches tracked working-tree files or the index, and pathspecs can restrict the paths. For example:

git grep -n 'pattern' -- src
This is not equivalent to searching every file on disk. Untracked files are not included by default; searching them requires an explicit option, and ignored files require additional options. Use a filesystem search when generated, untracked, ignored, or otherwise untracked content is deliberately part of the task.
Before choosing a search command, decide which files belong in scope: tracked source, untracked work, ignored files, or everything under a directory. Also consider whether symlinks, generated output, or vendor trees should be included.
How a JavaScript Git hook can make a check routine
Git hooks run checks during Git operations, and a JavaScript hook can invoke a checker as part of a configured workflow. A sound design checks only the intended paths, gives a clear failure message, and avoids scanning the whole repository when a smaller scope will do. The particular JavaScript hook behind my reported prevention is not available, so the following is a pattern—not a description of that implementation or evidence that it reduced CPU to a measured value.

Use fixed arguments and bound the child process
Node.js documents child_process.spawn(command, args, options) as asynchronous process creation. With the default shell: false, the command and its arguments can be passed separately instead of assembled into a shell string. The API also supports a timeout and an abort signal. Avoid shell execution with unsanitized input, which Node.js warns can enable command injection.
For a fixed check, a JavaScript hook could invoke git grep with an explicitly scoped path. This illustrative example rejects a commit if it finds the literal text TODO_REMOVE under src; replace both with a real rule and scope for your project:
const { spawn } = require('node:child_process');
const child = spawn(
'git',
['grep', '-n', '-F', 'TODO_REMOVE', '--', 'src'],
{
cwd: process.cwd(),
stdio: 'inherit',
timeout: 10_000,
shell: false
}
);
child.on('error', (error) => {
console.error(`Could not run the repository check: ${error.message}`);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
child.on('close', (code, signal) => {
if (signal) {
console.error(`Repository check stopped by signal ${signal}`);
process.exitCode = 1;
} else if (code === 0) {
console.error('Remove TODO_REMOVE from src before committing.');
process.exitCode = 1;
} else if (code === 1) {
process.exitCode = 0;
} else if (code !== null) {
console.error(`Repository check failed with exit code ${code}`);
process.exitCode = 1;
}
});
Here, git grep exit code 0 means it found a match, while 1 means it found none; other failures should not be silently treated as success. The example searches tracked working-tree files under src, not a guaranteed snapshot of only the staged changes. If the rule must apply strictly to what will be committed, derive and check the staged file list or staged content instead, and handle filenames safely.

Handle output, errors, and hook installation deliberately
The example inherits the child process’s output streams, so it does not collect output in pipes. Node.js notes that an unread pipe can fill and block a child process. If a hook captures output instead, it should consume the streams. Also test the hook’s failure path, timeout behavior, and message in the environments where the project uses it.
Git hooks help only where they are installed and run. They can be bypassed or absent in some environments, so treat a local hook as workflow automation rather than universal enforcement. Husky’s documentation shows one way to configure hooks and troubleshoot them; the right setup depends on the project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What this incident does—and does not—establish
My report is that a grep -r trap led to a 100% CPU reading and that I prevented a recurrence with a JavaScript Git hook. The available details do not include the exact command, working directory, machine or operating system, repository contents, process-monitor evidence, hook source, installation method, or before-and-after measurements. GNU grep, Git, Node.js, and Husky documentation explain the relevant mechanics and implementation options; they do not independently verify the specific incident or prove that a hook lowered CPU usage.
For the next search, start by naming the intended files and paths. For recurring checks, encode that scope in the command or hook, test what it includes, and make failures visible. That is a practical safeguard against accidental over-broad work—not a promise that grep or any other process can never use substantial CPU.
