If you’re looking for an UpCloud alternative, start with the workload rather than a provider ranking. DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode), Scaleway, OVHcloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud are all candidates—but they differ in regions, services, pricing models, and how much infrastructure you manage yourself. No current, controlled benchmark establishes one as a like-for-like winner over UpCloud.

What to compare before choosing an UpCloud alternative

UpCloud describes its platform as offering cloud compute, servers, databases, storage, and Kubernetes. Its homepage also advertises API access, flat-rate pricing, server deployment in under 45 seconds, and a “99.999% uptime SLA across 15 data centres.” Those are UpCloud’s published claims, not independently verified comparative results; review the current service and SLA terms before using them as a benchmark. Its European-sovereignty messaging is not, by itself, a legal determination that a service meets your compliance obligations.

Compare candidates against the same workload and operating requirements:

  • Locations and residency: Confirm the exact regions available, latency to users, and contractual requirements for data location.
  • Total monthly cost: Match vCPU, memory, storage, and expected traffic. Include egress, included transfer, backups or snapshots, public IPs, support, taxes, and any commitment discounts—not just the entry price.
  • Compute and storage: Check the instance class and persistent storage type and capacity you need. Without a current, reproducible benchmark, advertised specifications do not prove that one provider will perform better for your application.
  • Managed services: Decide whether you need managed databases, Kubernetes, load balancing, object storage, or an application platform. These may reduce operational work, but service coverage and implementation differ.
  • Reliability and recovery: Read the SLA definition, exclusions, and support commitments. Plan backups and disaster recovery separately; a published SLA is not a measurement of observed uptime.
  • Day-to-day operations: Account for the team’s familiarity with the console and API, infrastructure-as-code support, migration effort, and reliance on provider-specific services.
  • Compliance and support: Verify applicable certifications, contract terms, regional availability, and support tiers for your specific workload.

DigitalOcean’s provider-published comparison guidance also emphasizes scalability, reliability, performance, egress and total cost of ownership, SLAs, support, and provider profile (DigitalOcean’s Hetzner alternatives guide). Treat its provider recommendations as editorial opinions from a market participant, not neutral rankings.

10 UpCloud alternatives to shortlist

The providers below are options to evaluate, not a ranked list or a claim that every service replaces UpCloud one for one. Some are focused on virtual machines; others offer much broader cloud catalogs.

1. DigitalOcean

Consider DigitalOcean if you want a developer-oriented catalog that includes Droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes, App Platform, storage, and GPU offerings. Its own AWS-alternatives article lists a Droplet example from $4 per month for 512 MiB of memory, one vCPU, and 10 GiB SSD storage. That is an article-specific example, not a current matched quote; check the live plan and transfer limits. See DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide for its comparison and qualifications.

2. Vultr

Vultr’s described options include cloud compute, bare metal, and GPU offerings. The same DigitalOcean article gives a $5-per-month entry VM example with 1 GB RAM and one vCPU. Do not treat that configuration or price as universally available or directly comparable to an UpCloud instance; verify current regional plans and included transfer.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Hetzner

Hetzner is presented in the comparisons as a cost-conscious, self-managed compute option with European and North American offerings. A cited CX23 shared-vCPU example was $4.09 per month, but availability, region, setup charges, and traffic allowance need checking against current provider pricing. It may suit teams comfortable operating more of the stack themselves.

4. Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode)

Comparison material describes virtual machines, Kubernetes, managed databases, and Akamai network integration. A cited $5-per-month Nanode figure is an indicative starting configuration, not a current quote matched to your workload. Check current product naming, regional availability, and pricing directly.

5. Scaleway

Scaleway appears as a European option, with compute, bare-metal, and GPU services described in the comparison material. Validate the regions and products you need, along with current prices and traffic terms, on the comparison source’s Scaleway and other alternatives overview.

6. OVHcloud

OVHcloud’s described portfolio includes public cloud, dedicated servers, and private-cloud products. This breadth may be relevant if your requirements extend beyond virtual machines; compare the exact product category, region, support, and contract terms rather than assuming that similarly named services are equivalent. The same alternatives overview provides additional market context.

7. Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS is worth considering when the workload depends on a broad service catalog or an existing AWS ecosystem. Its breadth can also mean more choices and operational complexity than a focused virtual-server setup. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives article describes its own comparative approach; confirm services, regional availability, and costs against AWS’s current terms.

8. Google Cloud

Google Cloud may fit workloads that benefit from its data, analytics, and AI tooling or an existing Google Cloud environment. Check whether the specific services and regions you need are available and price the complete architecture; a broad platform is not automatically a better fit for a straightforward VM deployment. The alternatives overview includes it among the providers to consider.

9. Microsoft Azure

Azure may be a candidate when Microsoft ecosystem integration matters. Evaluate the services, regions, support arrangements, and full workload cost that apply to your deployment rather than relying on a general “best for” label. Azure is also included in the provider comparison material.

10. Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, or Alibaba Cloud

These are three additional candidates named in provider-comparison material, but they serve different possible requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable. Oracle Cloud is raised for Oracle-centric or hybrid needs, IBM Cloud for regulated or hybrid scenarios, and Alibaba Cloud for Asia-Pacific or China-related needs. Those are starting points for investigation, not verified recommendations. Confirm regional availability, legal requirements, product fit, and pricing with the relevant provider. The alternatives overview and Hetzner alternatives guide include these providers in their broader comparisons.

For a useful comparison, price the same configuration and traffic pattern across providers, then add backups, addresses, support, taxes, and any other required services. Check each provider’s current official pricing and calculator immediately before committing.

Choose by workload, not by a generic ranking

  • For a developer-focused VM plus managed-service catalog: Compare DigitalOcean, Vultr, and Akamai Cloud against the services your application actually uses.
  • For a self-managed, cost-conscious deployment: Include Hetzner, while checking the exact plan, region, and traffic terms.
  • For European-provider options or different infrastructure formats: Investigate Scaleway and OVHcloud, confirming the required services and contractual location terms.
  • For an existing ecosystem or a broad service requirement: Evaluate AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure against the operational overhead and complete cost of the architecture.
  • For a specific Oracle, hybrid, regulated, or Asia-Pacific/China-related requirement: Investigate Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, or Alibaba Cloud only after confirming the relevant service, location, and legal fit.

Plan a move before changing providers

Once a candidate meets the requirements, test the migration rather than treating a plan-page comparison as proof of fit. Inventory your current compute, persistent storage, traffic, backups, DNS, databases, and provider-specific services. Build a matched cost estimate, then deploy a representative workload in the target region and check application behavior, latency, backup restoration, and operational procedures. Set a cutover and rollback plan that accounts for data synchronization and DNS changes. These checks reveal migration risks that entry prices and service lists cannot resolve.
