On Linux, “port forwarding” can mean three different things: letting the kernel route packets between interfaces, redirecting selected traffic with a firewall/NAT rule, or tunneling an application connection through SSH. Choose based on the path traffic should take; enabling net.ipv4.ip_forward alone does not create a port mapping or make a service reachable.
Choose the kind of forwarding you need

For “How do I forward a port to another machine?”, determine whether packets should be routed through the Linux host, redirected by its firewall, or carried inside an SSH connection. Those approaches operate at different layers and are not interchangeable.
Enable kernel forwarding only when Linux must route packets
The kernel parameter net.ipv4.ip_forward controls whether IPv4 packets are forwarded between interfaces. The Linux kernel reference describes the function as “Forward Packets between interfaces” and lists the default as 0 (disabled). The kernel IP Sysctl reference also warns that changing this variable resets network parameters to host defaults (RFC1122) or router defaults (RFC1812).
That makes this a routing configuration change, not simply a switch for opening a port. Forwarding packets successfully also depends on the host’s routes and firewall policy. The correct complete setup depends on the network topology; there is no universal command sequence established for every distribution and gateway.

Use firewalld for a selected port mapping
firewalld’s forward-port feature redirects a specified port or range and protocol to the same or another port, on this host or another host. The zone manual describes these mapping possibilities. The firewall-cmd manual documents TCP, UDP, SCTP, and DCCP for this option; a destination address (toaddr) implicitly enables IP forwarding in firewalld.
Forward-port versus masquerading
- Forward-port redirects matching traffic for a port to a selected port or destination address.
- Masquerading translates private network addresses behind a public address. It is not the same operation as forwarding one selected port.
Use the mapping that fits the traffic path rather than treating masquerading and port redirection as synonyms. The firewalld zone documentation explains both features.

Runtime and permanent configuration
firewalld maintains separate runtime and permanent configurations. A change made without --permanent affects runtime state and does not survive reload or restart. A permanent change is stored for later and is loaded into runtime on reload or startup. Timeout-based rules are temporary and cannot be combined with --permanent. Follow the syntax for the installed firewalld version in the firewall-cmd manual.
Check which zone or policy applies before adding a rule. Zones generally cover input filtering for end-station use; firewalld policies can filter input, output, and forwarded traffic, a distinction that matters when the machine routes for other devices, virtual machines, or containers. Version and backend checks
firewalld behavior depends on the installed version and firewall backend. Its documentation notes an nftables forward-port limitation requiring Linux 5.5 or later in a specific case; that is not a universal minimum for every forward-port configuration. Check the note against your actual rule and system in the firewall-cmd manual.
If you combine direct rules with firewalld’s nftables backend, account for its documented caveat: an ACCEPT in a direct rule may not by itself accept packets through firewalld’s nftables ruleset. Prefer a rich rule when it can express the intended policy. See firewalld direct rules documentation.

Use SSH forwarding when the connection should travel through SSH
SSH forwarding tunnels an application connection through an SSH server; it does not configure kernel routing or a firewall’s NAT mapping. In local forwarding (-L), the client listens locally and sends the connection through SSH to a destination reachable from the server. In remote forwarding (-R), a listener is requested on the server side and connections to it travel back through SSH to a destination reachable from the client.
The SSH server can limit what clients may forward. OpenSSH documents permitopen restrictions for destinations requested by local forwarding, permitlisten restrictions for remote forwarding listen addresses and ports, and GatewayPorts settings that can further restrict remote listener addresses. Consult the OpenSSH sshd_config manual for the server’s settings and syntax.

Check the full traffic path when forwarding fails
- Identify the traffic type first: a service on the Linux host, packets routed through it, a firewall port redirection, or an SSH tunnel.
- Confirm the service is listening and reachable at the destination. A forwarding rule cannot make an unavailable service work.
- For firewalld, verify the zone or policy handling the traffic and whether the change exists in runtime, permanent configuration, or both.
- For routed traffic, check that routing and firewall policy allow the intended path in addition to kernel forwarding.
- For SSH, check server-side forwarding restrictions as well as the requested listen address and destination.
- Avoid broad exposure: limit allowed sources, ports, and SSH forwarding destinations to what the task requires.
