The Quest 3S can operate without a console or PC; PS VR2 requires a separately sold PS5 for PS5 use. If you do not own a gaming console or PC
A standalone headset is the clearest way to estimate your initial hardware spend: Meta lists Quest 3S at $349.99 for 128 GB or $449.99 for 256 GB. The package includes controllers and basic setup accessories, so a separate console is not part of the listed entry price. Confirm current availability and terms on Meta’s U.S. Quest page.
If you already own a PS5
Sony’s PS VR2 U.S. recommended retail price is $399.99, announced February 27, 2025, and effective starting in March 2025. Sony says regional timing and bundle availability can vary. The headset is not compatible with PS4. Check Sony’s PS VR2 page for platform details.

If you do not own a PS5
The PS VR2 price alone is not your complete starting cost: you must also obtain a PS5, which Sony sells separately. The sources here do not establish a current PS5 price, so a precise combined total would depend on the console model and offer available where you shop. Sony also describes a PC adapter for Steam VR, but that does not remove the separately stated PS5 requirement for PS5 use.
Plan for games and optional subscriptions
The headset is only part of what you may spend. Games and other digital content can add to the cost, and subscriptions may be offered, but the cited sources do not establish a representative yearly or lifetime budget. Do not treat optional accessories or a subscription as mandatory parts of every setup. Start with the headset’s included items, then budget only for additional hardware or content you have a reason to buy.

How to compare the real cost of two VR systems
- Check what hardware you already own. A PS5 is required for PS VR2 use with PlayStation 5; Quest 3S is listed as a standalone headset.
- Compare the configuration you would actually buy. Quest 3S has two listed storage prices, while Sony’s PS VR2 figure is a U.S. recommended retail price.
- Check what comes in the box. Both manufacturers list controllers and other included items; accessories not listed as included may be an additional purchase.
