They do not guarantee correct code or eliminate low-quality output: treat rules as durable guidance, then review changes and run the project’s normal checks.
Where do Cursor rules go?
Project rules live in .cursor/rules and can be committed with the repository. That makes them available to teammates working in the same codebase and keeps project-specific instructions alongside the project. Cursor’s Rules documentation describes the available rule types, formats, and guidance for writing them.
Cursor uses MDC files for project rules. Their metadata can specify a description, file-path globs, and whether a rule is always applied. Cursor also documents User Rules and Memories; those are distinct from rules committed for one codebase.
The older .cursorrules file is deprecated. Cursor recommends Project Rules instead. Cursor also documents AGENTS.md as a plain Markdown alternative; the exact behavior depends on the Cursor surface you use.

Choose the narrowest useful scope
Not every instruction belongs in every agent task. Choose a rule type based on who needs the guidance and when it should apply.
| Mechanism | Best fit | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| User Rules | Personal preferences you want to carry across projects | Cursor documents these separately from project rules; they are not the same as instructions committed to a repository. |
| Always | Short, stable project guidance relevant to nearly every task | Included broadly. |
| Auto Attached | Conventions that apply to particular files or directories | Attached when file paths match the rule’s configured glob. |
| Agent Requested | Specialized guidance the agent may need for some tasks | Made available for the agent to select; include a clear description so its purpose is understandable. |
AGENTS.md |
Plain Markdown project instructions | Cursor documents this as an alternative to MDC project rules. |
For example, a repository-wide instruction to run the standard test command may belong in an always-on rule. A React component convention can be scoped to matching frontend files. A deployment procedure used only for release work can be an agent-requested rule with a description that makes its use clear. Avoid implying that every rule is active for every task: activation depends on the chosen type and scope.

How do I create Cursor rules?
- Find recurring corrections. Look for project facts the agent repeatedly misses: which test command to run, which helper to use, or which existing pattern a new feature should follow.
- Choose a home and scope. Put project-specific instructions in
.cursor/rules, then select Always, Auto Attached, or Agent Requested according to when the instruction is relevant. - Write an observable action. Replace broad requests such as “write clean code” with a specific direction, such as “Use the existing API validation helper in
src/....” Replace the example path with the actual file in your repository. - Point to canonical examples. Name a representative file or existing implementation instead of copying a large amount of project documentation into the rule.
- Keep it focused and maintain it. Split unrelated topics into separate, composable rules. Update instructions when commands, file structure, or project conventions change.
Cursor’s best practices for coding with agents give examples of concrete context such as build, type-check, and test commands, code-style conventions, and directions to follow an established project pattern. Substitute the real commands and files for your own project rather than copying example values literally.
What should a useful rule file say?
Cursor’s Rules documentation says, “Good rules are focused, actionable, and scoped.” It also advises: “Avoid vague guidance. Write rules the way you would write a clear internal doc.” In practice, a rule should help an agent decide what to do in a particular situation, not merely ask it to produce a desirable result.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For example, a project rule might give the actual test command, identify a canonical component, and direct the agent to use the project’s existing validation helper for API input. These are illustrative details: replace them with your repository’s commands, conventions, and paths.
Keep a rule concise. Cursor recommends under 500 lines as a good target, not as a measured cutoff at which agent performance changes. If one file is accumulating unrelated policies, split those topics into separate rules and scope each appropriately. Referencing a canonical implementation can also be clearer than embedding extensive documentation.

How can I stop Cursor from changing code conventions?
Make the relevant convention explicit, attach it to the work where it matters, and point to an example the agent can follow. For a formatting or component convention, a path-based rule can limit the instruction to matching files. For a project-wide workflow, an always-on rule may be appropriate. If a convention only applies to a specialized task, use a described agent-requested rule.
When the repository changes, revisit the associated rule and its file references. A stale command or example can send the agent in the wrong direction. For the CLI specifically, Cursor says it reads root-level AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md alongside .cursor/rules; do not assume that CLI behavior describes every Cursor UI workflow. See Cursor’s CLI documentation.

Do Cursor rules prevent bad code?
No guarantee is established by Cursor’s documentation. Rules shape the context and consistency of an agent’s work; they are not proof that a change is correct, complete, or safe. No source cited here provides a controlled Cursor-specific statistic showing how much rules reduce low-quality output.
Inspect the generated diff, confirm that the intended instructions were relevant to the task, and verify the change using the project’s normal review and checks. Depending on the project, that may mean running its build, type-check, and tests. A rule that asks for a check does not replace running it or examining the result.
