RainCheck was proposed as an online-to-offline (O2O) commerce platform: shoppers could discover or save products online, then visit a physical store to buy them, while a Raintoken (RAIN) system was intended to make loyalty rewards portable across participating programs. That describes the project’s design and claims—not a verified, currently operating retail network. The available accounts do not establish merchant adoption, independently measured results, or whether the historic platform and token remain active.
What RainCheck was intended to do
TechBullion’s August 2018 review presented RainCheck as a way to connect online product discovery with in-store shopping and sales. Rather than treating an online browse and an offline purchase as unrelated events, the proposed service would help carry a shopper’s interest—such as a product saved to a wishlist—toward a later store visit. The project also positioned loyalty rewards as part of that bridge. TechBullion’s 2018 review is a historical account of the proposal, not an independent technical audit.
In practical terms, the idea addressed a familiar retail problem: a retailer may attract interest online but complete the sale in person, where ordinary web analytics cannot automatically attribute the purchase to the earlier product search. RainCheck’s proposed software stack aimed to connect those stages using product information, inventory, location, payment and loyalty components. Whether that connection worked reliably for live merchants is not independently established by the cited accounts.
How the proposed platform would work
In a May 2019 interview, co-founder Cameron Wall described a broader set of components than a token alone: product and inventory feeds, wishlists, payments and wallets, location or proximity features, POS and card-linked offers, analytics, and loyalty modules. These are the elements the company said it was assembling; the interview does not show that every module was launched or broadly deployed. Wall’s 2019 interview is a primary account of the company’s plans, but its claims are self-reported.

- Products and inventory enter the system. Retailers would provide catalog and inventory information so shoppers could find products and, in principle, identify relevant stores.
- A shopper signals interest. Product discovery or a wishlist could preserve an item for later consideration rather than ending the journey at the online search.
- Location and purchase signals connect online interest to a store. Proximity features and integrations with payment cards or point-of-sale (POS) systems were intended to help associate a store visit or transaction with the shopper’s earlier interest. The sources do not document a verified attribution rate or a complete live workflow.
- Loyalty features add rewards to the experience. The project proposed aggregating participating rewards programs and using Raintoken as a transferable mechanism. The rules for program participation, conversion values and redemption limits are not established in the cited material.
What the RAIN token was for
RainCheck’s token proposition centered on loyalty portability: Raintoken, also referred to as RAIN, was intended to let value move across participating loyalty programs instead of remaining isolated in each retailer’s points scheme. The 2018 review and Wall’s interview describe that goal as part of the platform’s design. They do not establish that a live network of programs exchanged and redeemed rewards at scale.
The project linked the token to Stellar, but a blockchain does not by itself make an end-to-end shopping service decentralised. Product feeds, cloud software, card networks, retailer systems, POS integrations and participating merchants would still be dependencies in the described model. For a shopper or retailer, the meaningful questions are who could participate, how reward values were converted, and where a reward could actually be spent; those operational details are not settled by the cited accounts.

What was still being built in 2019
Wall said in the 2019 interview that SKU-level card-linked offers requiring POS integration and the Stellar wallet were still being built at that time. That is an important qualification: those capabilities should not be described as finished features based on the interview. The source does not establish their later release or present availability.
TechBullion’s review also attributed an average transaction time of “around 5 seconds” to the platform. The article does not provide an independent test, measurement method or conditions for that figure, so it should be read as a claim made in the 2018 review, not as a verified performance benchmark.

How to judge the platform’s claims
A fair assessment separates a compelling product concept from evidence that the complete service operated in retail settings. Online-to-store attribution depends on a reliable link between an online product interaction and an offline sale; the historical accounts do not establish how often SKU-level matching succeeded in live use. Loyalty portability likewise depends on participating programs, conversion rules and redemption terms, not just on issuing a token.
- Attribution: Was a product view or saved item matched to an actual purchase, and was SKU-level matching live or still planned?
- Integration effort: What POS, inventory-feed, card-linking and payment work did each retailer need? Wall’s account explicitly says some POS-dependent work remained under development in 2019.
- Reward usefulness: Which programs accepted or exchanged value, how was conversion determined, and what restrictions applied?
- Decentralisation: Which parts relied on Stellar, and which depended on RainCheck’s software, retailers, card networks and store systems?
- Evidence of operation: Was a feature a proposal, roadmap item, pilot or documented live service? The available accounts are not independent evidence of adoption, conversion or transaction volume.
Is RainCheck still operating?
The available sources do not establish whether the historic RainCheck/RAIN platform is still operating, whether its wallet or token remain supported, or whether merchants and consumers currently use it. Cloud Ventures’ portfolio page labels RainCheck an “exit,” but that label does not answer those specific questions. Cloud Ventures’ portfolio page is not evidence that the historic service or token is currently available.

There is also a naming ambiguity. The current Raincheck.co homepage describes a multi-channel customer-service engagement platform. The cited material does not establish that it is the same business or product as the historical Stellar-linked RainCheck and RAIN project, so the two should not be treated as one without evidence of continuity.

RainCheck’s historical proposition was an ambitious combination of O2O product discovery, store-level purchase attribution and portable loyalty rewards. Its described software stack makes clear that the idea involved much more than a cryptocurrency wallet, while the 2019 interview also shows that key POS-linked and wallet features were still under construction then. The cited sources explain the concept and its intended benefits, but do not verify broad deployment, measurable retail outcomes or current operation. Treat RainCheck as a historical platform proposal with unresolved present-day status, rather than as a confirmed active service.
