Prototype pollution is a JavaScript vulnerability in which attacker-controlled input causes properties to be added to or changed on an object prototype. Because JavaScript looks up missing properties through the prototype chain, a value placed on a shared prototype can influence many objects in the same runtime. That does not make every object or application automatically exploitable: harmful effects depend on application code that later reads the polluted property and uses it in a sensitive operation.
How JavaScript prototypes make pollution possible
JavaScript objects can inherit properties from another object, their prototype. When code reads a property that an object does not have itself, JavaScript can continue the lookup up that chain. MDN explains that changing a built-in prototype such as Object.prototype can therefore make an added property visible on many derived objects, including objects an attacker cannot access directly: MDN’s prototype pollution security guide.
This shared lookup behavior is useful for inheritance, but it creates risk when untrusted keys are treated as instructions for modifying object structure. MITRE classifies the weakness as CWE-1321: Improperly Controlled Modification of Object Prototype Attributes.
How attacker-controlled input can pollute a prototype
A common route is a function that recursively merges, clones, or assigns properties from an input object. Similar risks arise in path setters that interpret a string of property names as a route through nested objects. Names such as __proto__, constructor, and prototype can be dangerous when a helper processes them without safeguards: instead of assigning an ordinary data field, the operation may reach a prototype.

For a security review, trace untrusted data from request parsers and other input sources into recursive merge helpers, dynamic property assignments, cloning routines, and path-based setters. The key question is whether an attacker can control the property names and whether the assignment can reach a prototype. OWASP’s testing guidance describes this source-oriented review and the need to look for code that can consume polluted values: OWASP Web Security Testing Guide: Prototype Pollution.
Why pollution does not automatically mean exploitation
There are two distinct parts to an exploit: a pollution source and a gadget. The source is the vulnerable operation that lets attacker-controlled data change a prototype. A gadget is existing application or dependency code that later reads an inherited, attacker-controlled value and uses it in a consequential way. OWASP notes that pollution by itself rarely causes harm directly; impact depends on a suitable gadget and the runtime and code path in which it is reachable.

This distinction matters when judging severity. Finding an unsafe merge is evidence of a pollution risk, but it does not by itself establish that an attacker can trigger a particular outcome. Reviewers also need to identify which polluted property can be read, where that read occurs, and what the program does with it.
How one polluted property can affect an application
If a shared prototype is modified, unrelated objects that inherit from it may see the added property whenever they lack their own value. This can affect code that assumes a missing property remains absent, especially configuration handling, authorization checks, or feature decisions.

MDN illustrates how polluted properties could alter a fetch() request’s method or body, and how an inherited authorization-related property could affect logic that tests a missing property. These are examples of possible gadgets, not a claim that every application contains them. OWASP identifies DOM-based cross-site scripting and bypass of client-side defenses as possible browser impacts when suitable code is reachable. In Node.js, possible consequences include denial of service, security-logic bypass, and remote code execution; none is automatic for every pollution flaw.
The possibility of serious Node.js consequences is also the subject of the USENIX Security Symposium 2023 paper “Silent Spring: Prototype Pollution Leads to Remote Code Execution in Node.js”. It describes a multi-stage approach using multi-label static taint analysis to find prototype pollution in Node.js libraries and applications, along with a hybrid method for identifying universal gadgets. Its findings demonstrate studied attack paths and detection techniques; they should not be read as a measure of how prevalent the vulnerability is.

How to reduce prototype pollution risk
Use multiple controls: prevent unsafe keys from reaching dangerous assignments, avoid inherited-property assumptions in sensitive reads, and reduce the runtime attack surface where practical. A single mitigation, especially one aimed only at __proto__, does not cover every route or gadget.
- Validate input against a strict schema. Reject unnecessary properties and set explicit defaults for values that must not be inherited. This reduces the set of attacker-controlled keys and avoids treating absence as a security guarantee.
- Reject dangerous key segments before assignment. If code must dynamically assign attacker-controlled keys, reject names such as
__proto__,constructor, andprototype. Avoid feeding untrusted input into recursive merge or path-setting helpers unless they safely handle these cases. - Use safer dictionary structures. Use
Mapfor untrusted dictionary keys. If an ordinary object is required, create it withObject.create(null); it will not inherit fromObject.prototype. - Make sensitive reads explicit. Use
Object.hasOwn()when the decision should depend only on an object’s own property, or establish a safe explicit default. For relevant enumeration, preferObject.keys()orfor...ofoverfor...in, which can include inherited enumerable properties. - Consider freezing built-in prototypes. This can limit changes to those prototypes, but may break application or dependency code that expects to modify built-ins. Treat it as a compatibility-sensitive design choice, not a universal drop-in fix.
- Keep dependencies current. Check libraries that merge or copy object properties against relevant security advisories, and update vulnerable versions.
Node.js runtime hardening
Node.js provides the --disable-proto option. The --disable-proto=delete mode removes the __proto__ accessor, while --disable-proto=throw makes access throw. This is defense in depth, not a complete fix: it does not remove the separate constructor.prototype route, and it does not replace input validation or safe object handling. Confirm compatibility with the application and its dependencies before enabling it. See the Node.js CLI documentation for --disable-proto.

How to investigate a suspected vulnerability
- Trace input to assignment. Follow attacker-controlled values from parsers or other entry points into merges, clones, dynamic assignments, and path setters. Establish whether the attacker controls keys, not just values.
- Check whether a prototype is reachable. Determine whether a special key or nested path can modify a prototype rather than creating an ordinary own property.
- Find reachable gadgets. Search application and dependency code for reads of potentially inherited properties, then determine whether any such value reaches a sensitive operation or decision.
- Review dependencies and advisories. Check versions of utilities that merge or copy object properties and assess whether vulnerable code paths are used.
- Test in an authorized environment. OWASP names DOM Invader for automated client-side source and gadget discovery, Burp Suite for intercepting and crafting JSON payloads in server-side testing, and ppmap and ppfuzz as related tools. A tool finding is a starting point: confirm reachability and impact in the application’s code.
