That separates a wallet display or import problem from an unprocessed withdrawal—and from a confirmed transfer to the wrong address, which may not be reversible. Preserve the source files and transaction evidence before correcting any report.
1. Find the original record and transaction ID
Work outward from where the activity began. For an exchange withdrawal, open its withdrawal details; for a trade, check the exchange’s order and activity history. Also check wallet activity, email confirmations, account statements, and any CSV or tax report you previously exported. Coinbase Exchange documents routes for orders, deposits, withdrawals, balances, and wallet statements in its financial statements guidance.
Record the transaction ID (also called a transaction hash, where applicable), asset, amount, date and time, network, sending and receiving addresses, and fee. If the sending platform provides a withdrawal status but no transaction ID, note that too: the withdrawal may not yet have reached the blockchain.
2. Check the transaction on the correct network
Search the transaction ID on a blockchain explorer that supports the network the sender actually used. A token can exist on more than one network, and an explorer for the wrong chain will not establish whether the transfer occurred. Exodus recommends checking the correct network, transaction details and destination address when investigating a missing deposit (Exodus: My crypto deposit is missing).

Compare the explorer record against the sender’s details:
- Status: Is it pending, confirmed, failed, or absent?
- Asset and amount: Do they match the intended transfer? Check the token, not just the displayed value.
- Destination: Does the recorded recipient address match the address supplied by the receiving wallet or service?
- Time: Does the on-chain timestamp fit the withdrawal or transfer record? Interfaces may display time zones differently.
If the transaction ID is not found
Check the sender’s withdrawal status first. A custodial exchange can show a withdrawal request before it has broadcast a transaction; if no transaction has been submitted to the network, there is nothing for an explorer to find. Contact the sending platform with the withdrawal reference and ask whether it was processed and, if so, for the transaction ID. Exodus likewise advises checking with the sending service when a transaction cannot be found on the relevant explorer (Exodus: My crypto deposit is missing).

If the transaction is confirmed
A confirmed on-chain record shows that a transaction was recorded on that network; it does not guarantee that a wallet app or receiving service will display or credit it. If the destination is correct, continue with the wallet and recipient checks below. If the destination is not the one intended, treat that as a transfer-recovery issue rather than a record-import issue.
3. Rule out a wallet display or network mismatch
In the receiving wallet, confirm that the asset is enabled on the network shown in the explorer. Refresh or sync the wallet’s network data and check whether the asset is present under another supported network. Exodus specifically recommends refreshing and checking other supported networks when an asset appears missing (Exodus: My crypto deposit is missing).

If the explorer shows a confirmed transfer to the correct address but the receiving service has not credited it, send that service the transaction ID, network, asset, amount, destination address, and confirmation evidence. Do not send your seed phrase or private keys as proof of ownership.
4. Rebuild the transaction history from original sources
For a missing or incorrect history report, collect records separately from every exchange, wallet and relevant account. Compare exchange trades and internal transfers with the public-chain entries where available. One platform’s tax report may cover only activity in that platform’s accounts: Coinbase says its Coinbase Taxes activity scope excludes Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro activity (Coinbase Taxes: Reports).

Export the full available date range from each source and retain the original files unchanged. Then reconcile entries by transaction ID where one exists, and by date, asset, amount, fee, addresses and source reference where it does not. Automated-import coverage depends on which exchange services and blockchains an integration supports; an import can omit activity even when the original service has it (Blockpit: How to import transactions).

5. Correct imported records with an audit trail
Classify the discrepancy before editing anything. It may be a missing entry, a duplicate, a time-zone or timestamp difference, an omitted account, or a wrong transaction type. Preserve the original export and transaction identifiers; make manual changes only when a source record supports them.

If an import tool supports manual entries, attach or retain the evidence that explains the correction. Blockpit says a transaction present in source history can be added manually, or reported to its support team with a marked example and supporting documentation (Blockpit: How to import transactions). Do not “fix” a mismatch by deleting an unexplained entry or inventing a transaction to make totals agree.
- Save untouched copies of all exports and relevant statements.
- List each discrepancy and the source evidence that supports the intended correction.
- Check whether timestamps use different time zones before treating similar entries as separate transactions.
- Correct or add only the affected entry, retaining its transaction ID or source reference and a note explaining the change.
- Reconcile the revised history against exchange balances and available on-chain records; preserve the revised report separately from the originals.
6. Keep records appropriate to your tax jurisdiction
Tax reporting and retention requirements depend on where you are and the type of activity; do not assume that an exchange’s tax report is a complete filing record. UK HMRC’s Cryptoassets Manual says, “The onus is therefore on the individual to keep their own records for each cryptoasset transaction.” Its guidance lists the cryptoasset type, transaction date, whether it was bought or sold, units, sterling value at the transaction date, cumulative units held, bank statements and wallet addresses (HMRC Cryptoassets Manual, CRYPTO10400; published 2021-03-30, updated 2025-11-28).
New Zealand Inland Revenue gives comparable recordkeeping guidance, recommends regular downloads of exchange history, and says records should be retained for at least seven years under its guidance. That period is specific to New Zealand guidance, not a universal retention rule (New Zealand Inland Revenue: Keeping records).
7. Know when a record fix cannot recover the funds
Correcting a wallet display or reconstructing an incomplete report is different from reversing a completed transfer. Ethereum.org states, “A transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible.” If the destination belongs to someone identifiable or to a custodial service, contact that recipient or service promptly; recovery is not assured. If a self-custody wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys are lost, there is no central reset process—Ethereum.org says, “Without your seed phrase or private keys, your funds cannot be recovered” (Ethereum.org FAQ).
Never disclose a seed phrase or private keys to a recovery helper. Ethereum.org warns that legitimate services do not ask for a seed phrase (Ethereum.org FAQ).
