A virtual reality (VR) game is a video game played in a digitally created 3D environment that a player experiences and interacts with using VR hardware, commonly a headset and tracking or controller inputs. The exact setup depends on the device, platform, and game.
What makes a game virtual reality?
The defining feature is the environment: VR presents a digitally generated world intended to give the player an immersive perspective and a way to interact within it. ITU-T’s formal terminology defines VR as an environment “fully generated by digital means” that differs from the local environment (ITU-T Recommendation P.1320, July 2022).
Games are one use of VR. The European Commission describes VR as allowing users to interact with virtual objects and other users in 3D environments (European Commission FAQ on virtual worlds). In a game, that interaction might involve looking around, moving through the virtual space, or using supported inputs to act on objects. Those examples describe common possibilities, not a required feature list for every VR game.
What hardware does a VR game use?
A VR setup commonly includes a head-mounted display, tracking systems, and controllers. The headset presents the virtual environment; tracking and input devices help the system register the player’s viewpoint and actions. The European Commission identifies these as equipment associated with VR, but does not prescribe one universal setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Requirements vary by headset, platform, and individual game. Some experiences may rely on different combinations of tracking or input, so check the game’s stated compatibility and hardware requirements rather than assuming every VR title uses the same controllers or accessories.
How is VR different from AR and XR?
VR, augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR) are related terms, but they do not mean the same thing. The European Commission uses XR as an umbrella term for immersive technologies including VR, AR, and mixed reality (MR). Technical definitions can vary by organization and context.

| Term | What the user experiences | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| VR | A digitally generated environment intended to differ from the user’s local surroundings. | One immersive technology; commonly experienced through a headset. |
| AR | Digital information integrated with or added to the user’s physical surroundings in real time. | An immersive technology that retains the real environment as part of the experience. |
| XR | Experiences involving real elements, virtual elements, or a combination. | A collective term that the European Commission uses to include VR, AR, and MR. |
These distinctions follow the European Commission’s FAQ and ITU-T P.1320. Another standards document, ISO/IEC TR 23844:2023, discusses immersive technologies including AR, VR, and MR in the specific context of learning, education, and training; it is not a definition of video games.

What is the simplest way to identify a VR game?
- Look at the environment: the game presents a digitally created world rather than merely placing digital information over the physical surroundings.
- Check the interaction: the player experiences or interacts with elements in that virtual environment through supported VR inputs.
- Confirm compatibility: consult the game and platform requirements to learn which headset, tracking system, or controllers are needed.
