Grok is xAI’s AI model family; Groq is an AI inference company and technology provider. Grok is the model users interact with or call, while Groq’s LPU processors and GroqCloud provide infrastructure for running supported models. The names sound alike, but they refer to different parts of the AI stack.

A useful shorthand is: Grok is a model; Groq is an inference provider and technology stack. That distinction does not mean Groq owns Grok, or that every model available through Groq is Grok.
What Grok means
Grok is xAI’s model family. xAI’s announcement describes Grok as an AI model built with a custom training and inference stack. The announcement also presents Grok as having real-time knowledge through the X platform; that is xAI’s product description, not an independent evaluation. xAI cautions that, like other large language models, Grok can produce false or contradictory information.
What Groq means
Groq refers to a company and its AI inference technology. Its LPU, or Language Processing Unit, is a processor designed for AI inference. GroqCloud is the company’s cloud inference service, which makes supported models available to applications and users.

How Groq describes the LPU
In an explainer dated March 7, 2025, Groq describes a software-first compiler, programmable assembly-line architecture, deterministic scheduling and networking, and on-chip memory. The design aims to make resource use more predictable and reduce contention. Groq says the objective was to give developers greater control over hardware utilization.
That page claims the architecture can be “up to 10x more efficiently from an energy perspective compared to GPUs.” It also reports on-chip SRAM bandwidth of “upwards of 80 terabytes/second,” compared with “about eight terabytes/second” for GPU off-chip HBM. These are Groq’s own architectural claims, not independent benchmark results and not a comparison of Groq against the Grok model.

Why the names are easy to mix up
The spellings differ by one letter, but the terms describe different layers of an AI service. A model generates responses; inference infrastructure supplies the computing used to run a model. Groq can host or serve models without becoming the model itself. Groq’s documentation also describes compound systems that can use external tools; those are Groq services, not xAI’s Grok model family.

- Need infrastructure to run a model? Check GroqCloud’s current model catalog, availability, account requirements, and data-handling terms.
- Comparing service performance or cost? Test the same model or equivalent task under the same prompt, output length, region, concurrency, and quality requirements. The cited product pages do not establish a controlled Grok-versus-Groq comparison.
Model availability, features, and provider terms can change, so verify them with the provider before choosing a service. Compare the specific model, access route, workload, and data requirements—not the similar-sounding names.
