A person learns what a hand can do through sensation, practice, mistakes, and feedback. An AI agent controlling a lock, light, or thermostat cannot safely learn a device the same way: a test action can have real consequences. Rodrigo Giuliani’s argument is that devices therefore need to describe themselves—but a list of functions and settings is not enough.

Why an agent cannot learn a device by trying it

Human bodies and minds develop together through continual interaction. A person can try a small movement, feel what happened, and adjust. Giuliani contrasts that feedback loop with an agent acting on an external device: it may not perceive the physical result directly, and experimentation may affect other people or property.

Turning a light off is usually easy to reverse. Locking a door may leave someone outside. Both actions can be represented as a command, but they are not equally safe to discover through trial and error. The inability to experiment safely is therefore a design constraint, not merely an awkward interface that can be fixed by adding more commands.

What a device description needs to convey

A manifest is a structured description of a device and its controls. Giuliani’s examples make clear why a function name or parameter schema alone is insufficient: an agent needs to know not only what an action can do, but also what being wrong could mean and whether the device belongs in the current situation.

Information layer What it tells the agent Who is positioned to supply it
Capability What the device can do, including control types, ranges, and units—for example, a light’s brightness setting or a thermostat’s temperature target. The manufacturer can describe the device’s designed functions and parameters.
Consequence Whether an action is reversible and what disruption or harm may follow from a mistaken command. It depends on the action and its effects; a capability description by itself does not establish the cost of an error.
Deployment context Whether this installed device should be used in the present situation. The installer knows where the device is and what should not be automated there; the current situation determines which facts matter now.

Capability: what is possible

A capability declaration can state that a lock supports locking and unlocking, a light can switch on and off or adjust brightness, or a thermostat accepts a target temperature. Types, ranges, and units help an agent form a valid request. They do not tell it whether making that request now is appropriate.

Consequence: what it costs to be wrong

Reversibility is separate from capability. A system may be able to undo an action eventually, but that does not mean an error is harmless in the meantime. A light can generally be switched back on; a lock command could prevent someone from entering. The agent needs enough information to distinguish these risks rather than treating every available action as equally safe.

Deployment context: should this device be used here?

Manufacturer-level facts describe a device in general. They cannot, by themselves, establish whether a particular installed device should be controlled in a given setting. An installer may know that a device serves a space or function where automation is inappropriate, while the live situation may make an otherwise ordinary action consequential.

That distinction matters in emergency reasoning. Asking whether a device could matter in an emergency is so broad that many devices might qualify, making the answer unhelpful. The more useful question is whether this device should be used in the particular context.

Why one manifest field may not be enough

These layers come from different sources and operate at different times. A manufacturer can state a device’s capabilities; an installer can add site-specific knowledge; situation-dependent judgment concerns what is happening now. A single generic label risks obscuring those differences.

Giuliani warns that collapsing them can make an agent either too permissive or too brittle. A permissive system may act because a device technically supports a command, without accounting for its consequences or placement. A brittle system may respond to broad warnings by treating too many devices as unusable. Context-specific information is needed to make the distinction useful.

The open design question

Giuliani frames the challenge directly: “what is the minimum a device must declare so that an agent can act on it correctly without ever having been allowed to experiment on it?” He does not offer a clean answer. The essay is a design argument, not a standards document or an empirical evaluation, so it should not be read as an established manifest specification.

He presents DoSync as an open protocol effort intended to make the semantic layer between agents and physical systems more concrete. The broader point remains a question for the design of safe device interfaces: how to express capability, consequence, and the facts of a specific deployment without pretending they are interchangeable.
