Kafka periodically checks topic metadata for matches; when a new matching topic appears, its partitions may be added to the consumer group through a rebalance—not necessarily immediately.
Subscribe with a Java regular expression
Use the pattern overload of subscribe() to let Kafka match topic names dynamically:
Pattern topics = Pattern.compile("^orders\..+$");
consumer.subscribe(topics);This pattern matches names such as orders.created and orders.cancelled. The ^ and $ anchors make the intended full-name match explicit; adapt the prefix and suffix to your topic naming convention. This is an illustrative snippet, not an executed test.
For a deliberately limited set of names, make the alternatives explicit:

Pattern topics = Pattern.compile("^orders\.(created|cancelled)$");
consumer.subscribe(topics);Kafka also offers subscription to an explicit topic list. A regex can reduce list maintenance when topics are added under a naming convention, but it can also match names you did not intend. Both approaches still depend on group assignment and consumer operation; the API documentation does not establish a performance advantage for either.
How topic discovery and assignment work
A pattern subscription is metadata-driven and periodic, not an instant notification mechanism. Kafka checks topic metadata for names matching the pattern. For the documented Pattern API, metadata.max.age.ms influences refresh cadence; lowering it can make checks happen more frequently, at the cost of more frequent metadata refresh activity. When Kafka detects a newly created matching topic, its partitions may be incorporated into the consumer group assignment through a rebalance. Other group membership or partition changes can also trigger rebalances. In a consumer group, a partition is assigned to one process in that group at a time; adding a matching topic adds its partitions to the group’s assignment process rather than giving every consumer instance an independent copy. Separate groups can consume the same topic stream independently. See the Kafka 3.9.2 KafkaConsumer API.
Keep polling and coordinate rebalances
Calling subscribe() sets the subscription; it does not replace the consumer’s polling loop. The consumer uses active poll(Duration) calls to participate in group coordination, and rebalances take place during poll processing. Keep polling as part of consumer liveness.

If your application commits offsets manually, maintains partition-specific state, or needs cleanup when ownership changes, register a rebalance listener and handle partition revocation and assignment appropriately. Kafka’s API documents these callback and reassignment behaviors in its 4.2.0 consumer API.

Limit the names the consumer can match
Prefer a narrow, anchored expression that describes the intended topic family. A broad expression such as .* can make unrelated topics eligible for assignment. Topic names are matched against the expression, so verify punctuation, capitalization, and the complete name.

Check compatibility before using Kafka 4.2’s newer overload
Kafka 4.2 also documents a SubscriptionPattern overload. Its API documentation says this option is supported only with the CONSUMER group protocol and requires a pattern compatible with Google RE2/J. An incompatible expression can result in InvalidRegularExpression during a subsequent poll. Confirm the client version and broker capability before choosing it; the established Pattern overload is shown above. Details are in the Kafka 4.2.0 KafkaConsumer API.
Ensure authorization covers future matches
The consumer needs read access to topics it subscribes to and access to its configured group ID. If topics may be created later and match the expression, make sure authorization policy accounts for those future topic names as well as the topics present at startup.

Do not mix subscription and manual assignment unintentionally
The API documents state errors when a consumer calls subscribe() after an incompatible prior subscription or manual assign() call unless it unsubscribes first. Keep the consumer’s subscription model consistent, or explicitly clear its earlier subscription before changing models.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected topics
- Expected topic is not consumed: Compare its exact name with the Java expression, including dots, case, and anchors; verify that the consumer continues polling and allow for metadata refresh.
- A new match does not appear immediately: Discovery is periodic. For the
PatternAPI, reviewmetadata.max.age.ms; a shorter interval increases refresh activity as well as check frequency. - Unrelated topics are eligible: Narrow the expression and anchor it to the full naming rule.
- Subscription or poll reports an error: For
