GitHub CopilotのモデルをGitHubはどう評価している？
GitHubが2025年1月に公開した説明では、評価は性能・品質・安全性を対象とし、多数のタスクを一貫して処理できる自動テストと、コードや回答の主観的な品質を確認する人手評価を組み合わせています。自動指標だけでは読みやすさや要件への適合を十分に捉えきれず、個別の使用感だけでは大規模な比較が難しいためです。GitHubの評価方法の説明は、公開時点の運用例として読む必要があります。
コード修正を試すオフライン評価
GitHubは、もともとCIテストに合格していたコンテナ化リポジトリを意図的に変更し、候補モデルが修正してテストを再び通せるかを調べる方法を紹介しています。言語、フレームワーク、対応する言語バージョンを変えたシナリオも用意します。
- 4,000件超のオフラインテスト：GitHubが2025年の記事で公表した値で、その大半は自動CIパイプラインの一部と説明されています。
- 約100個のコンテナ化リポジトリ：同じく2025年時点の説明で、CIテストに合格した状態から変更を加え、モデルに修正させる評価用セットです。
- 1,000件超の技術質問：Copilot Chatの品質評価に使う質問コレクションです。単純な真偽問題は自動評価し、複雑な回答では別のLLMによる評価も利用するとされています。
これらの数は2025年の記事に記された値であり、2026年現在のテスト数や運用規模を示すものではありません。

補完、チャット、安全性で異なる指標

複雑な回答の評価と継続監視
複雑なチャット質問では、GitHubは性能が確認された別のLLMに回答を評価させる方法を説明しています。ただし、評価役のLLMの出力自体を監査し、人間の評価者との整合性や一貫性を保つ難しさも指摘しています。また、プロダクションモデルに毎日テストを行い、性能低下が見つかった場合は原因を監査し、必要に応じてプロンプトを変更するとしています。

自分の用途に合うCopilotモデルを比べる方法
すべての開発者や作業に共通する「最良モデル」はありません。GitHubのガイドに沿って、モデル名やベンチマーク順位だけで決めず、実際に担当させるタスクごとに比べます。
- 正解を判断できる小さな課題を用意する：簡単な関数や小規模なアプリから始め、期待する動作や正解を自分で確認できる状態にします。
- 新しい知識への対応を確かめる：使用中の言語、フレームワーク、ライブラリの版に関する課題を出し、プロジェクトのマニフェストなど既知の情報と照合します。
- 速度と応答性を用途別に見る：入力中に候補が出る補完では待ち時間が使い勝手を左右します。一方、探索的なチャットでは、より詳しい回答のために多少待てる場合があります。
- 実行結果だけでなくコード品質も読む：テストの成否に加え、命名、構造、慣習、コメント、モジュール性、読みやすさ、保守のしやすさを確認します。
- 課題の複雑さに見合うか比較する：推論型モデルは返答に時間がかかることがある一方、複雑な作業に向く場合があります。簡単な補完と難しい変更を同じ基準だけで評価しないようにします。
- いつもの仕事で一定期間使う：デバッグにかかる時間やリファクタリングの品質が変わるかを見ます。補完とチャットで異なるモデルを選ぶことも検討できます。

ベンチマークのスコアはどう読むべき？
ベンチマークは比較の手掛かりですが、スコアだけでモデルや開発環境の優劣を決めるのは不十分です。2026年6月のGitHubによるエージェントハーネス比較は、モデルそのものと、モデルをツール、コンテキスト、作業フローにつなぐハーネスを分けて扱っています。比較時には同じモデルとタスクを用い、コンテキスト長、推論努力、ツール選択、MCPサーバーなどの条件を揃える方針を説明しています。対象にはSWE-bench Verified、SWE-bench Pro、SkillsBench、TerminalBench、Windowsコンテナ内タスクを扱う社内Win-Hillが含まれます。GitHubのエージェントハーネス比較
GitHubは、同一モデル・タスクという条件で、Copilotのハーネスによるタスク解決率はモデル提供元のハーネスと概ね同等で、多くの設定でトークン使用量が少なかったと報告しています。これはGitHubが記載した特定の実験条件での結果であり、あらゆるモデル、タスク、設定に当てはまる独立した保証ではありません。

結果を引用・比較するときに確認する条件
- ベンチマークとモデル：何を解かせ、どのモデルを使った結果かを記録します。
- ハーネスと設定：ツール、コンテキスト長、推論努力など、結果に影響する設定を確かめます。
- 実行回数と集計方法：GitHubの記事では全ベンチマーク指標をpass@1で示し、小規模ベンチマークでは5回実行中の最高スコアを報告しています。TerminalBench 2では各モデルを5回評価し、全実行に2時間の制限を設け、モデルが生成したエラーも分析に残したと説明しています。
- 確率的なばらつき：同じ条件でも実行結果は揺れます。単一のスコアを確定的な性能差として解釈せず、記事が示す実行条件と日付を結果に添えます。
本番で使うLLMはベンチマーク以外に何を評価する？
公開ベンチマークで良い結果でも、本番の重要なケースで失敗することがあります。評価データが実際の入力分布を十分に表さない、入力に曖昧さや欠落がある、ラベルが不整合、まれでも重大なケースが運用上重要になる、といった要因があるためです。
GitHubの2026年8月の記事は、Secret Scanning用システムを題材に、本番前のLLM評価で製品判断と評価指標を結び付ける枠組みを示しています。これはCopilotモデルの直接評価結果ではなく、本番導入を考えるLLMシステム全般に役立つ原則です。GitHubの本番導入前評価の説明
