An in-memory LRU cache can speed up repeated certificate lookups by reusing parsed certificates and public keys instead of rereading and parsing PEM files on every check. The article behind this example reports cached lookups below 0.05 ms, but that is an author-reported result—not a universal guarantee or an independently reproduced benchmark. Whether a cache hit is safe also depends on expiry, refresh, trust validation, and revocation handling.

How LRU certificate caching reduces lookup work

On a cache miss, an implementation can read a PEM file, parse its certificate or public key, and retain the parsed object in memory. A later lookup for the same identity can reuse that object, avoiding repeated file access and parsing.

With a least-recently-used (LRU) policy, the cache removes the entry that has gone unused for the longest time when it reaches its capacity. A time-to-live (TTL) policy separately limits how long an entry may be reused before it expires and must be refreshed or rejected. Capacity controls memory use; TTL controls age. Neither policy, by itself, establishes that a cached identity remains trusted or unrevoked.

What the reported performance numbers mean

William Rodriguez’s wFabricSecurity article describes repeated PEM reads and parsing as a bottleneck, citing an earlier rate of 100 validations per second. It reports cached lookups below 0.05 ms and more than 2,500 cryptographic verifications per second per core after using an in-memory cache. The available article excerpt does not identify a reproducible benchmark setup, workload, cache-hit ratio, percentile, or test environment, so these figures should be read as the author’s claims rather than expected results for another system.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The example constructs an IdentityManager with cache_size=1024 and cache_ttl=300, then retrieves a certificate by a subject-like name. Those are example settings, not generally recommended defaults. The excerpt also claims testing with Hyperledger Fabric environments and Python 3.10 or later compatibility, but does not provide test details. See the wFabricSecurity article.

What TTL does—and does not—guarantee

A TTL is a maximum reuse period only if the application checks expiration correctly and refreshes or rejects expired entries. It does not mean that a verifier checks revocation online, receives revocation events immediately, or invalidates a cached certificate as soon as credentials are revoked. Between refreshes, a cached entry can remain in use unless the implementation has an additional invalidation mechanism.

For example, the separate AgentPKI Protocol v0.2 working draft sets a 300-second default TTL for issuer-directory caching, permits bounded Cache-Control hints, and describes CRL freshness in relation to next_update. It says that its revocation propagation window depends on publication latency, verifier TTL, and replica propagation; its reference verifier’s default window is described as typically under six minutes. These are rules and estimates for that draft, not general certificate-cache defaults or evidence about wFabricSecurity. AgentPKI Protocol v0.2 and its revocation guidance provide the protocol-specific details.

Checks a production implementation should make explicit

A fast cache hit is a data-access optimization, not proof that the full verification decision is complete. Before relying on a particular cache, establish which checks run on each verification and what happens when state changes.

  • Cache miss: Identify where the certificate or key is loaded from, how it is parsed, and whether a failed read or parse is cached.
  • Expiry: Confirm whether an expired entry triggers refresh, causes verification to fail, or falls back to another source.
  • Capacity eviction: Verify that removing an LRU entry only forces a later reload and does not alter trust policy.
  • Revocation: Determine whether the verifier uses CRLs, OCSP, push invalidation, or another mechanism. The wFabricSecurity excerpt does not establish its revocation integration or invalidation behavior.
  • Refresh failure: Decide whether stale data may be used temporarily or whether verification must fail closed; make the choice consistent with the system’s security requirements.
  • Verification policy: Check separately how the implementation enforces certificate validity dates, chain or path validation, signatures, issuer-key refresh, and revocation status. The available excerpt does not establish which of these wFabricSecurity checks it repeats on a cache hit.

How to evaluate a sub-millisecond claim

Measure the cache in the workload where it will run, rather than treating one lookup figure as end-to-end verification time. Report hit and miss latency separately, along with throughput, concurrency, cache-hit ratio, entry count, refresh behavior, and latency percentiles. Include the storage and parsing work performed on a miss, and state whether certificate-chain validation and revocation checks are included in the timing.

Also record the cache capacity and TTL, the certificate source, runtime and environment, and what happens during expiry or refresh failure. Without those details, a fast hit may describe only retrieval of an already-parsed object—not the full cost or security behavior of certificate verification.
