PS5 adaptive triggers change how much resistance you feel when pressing L2 or R2 on the DualSense wireless controller. A game can use that resistance to suggest an action—for example, the tension of drawing a bow. The effect is separate from haptic feedback, which creates tactile sensations elsewhere in the controller.
What adaptive triggers do
When a supported game sends a trigger effect, the DualSense adjusts the resistance you feel as you press L2 or R2. That lets a trigger feel different for different in-game actions instead of behaving like an ordinary button with the same feel every time.
Sony’s example is drawing a bow: the trigger can create a sense of increasing tension as you pull. The trigger is still a physical control on the DualSense wireless controller; the game changes the feel of pressing it to represent what is happening on screen.
How the game controls the feel
The game determines whether to use a trigger effect and what resistance to apply. Sony says developers can program the left and right triggers independently, so L2 and R2 can behave differently in the same game. For instance, a game could make one trigger feel tense for one action and leave the other with a different feel.

Sony’s public explanations describe the effect from the player’s perspective: the game controls trigger resistance to simulate an in-game action. They do not provide enough detail to verify the controller’s internal mechanism or control algorithm, so claims about a particular motor, gear train, or force range should not be assumed from those explanations.
Adaptive triggers versus haptic feedback

These features can work together, but they are not synonyms: adaptive triggers change the feel of the trigger buttons, while haptic feedback produces other tactile sensations through the controller.

When adaptive triggers work
The effect depends on both the game and the device. On PS5, it is available when the game supports it. Connecting a DualSense does not make every game use adaptive triggers.
On PC, PlayStation says select games support DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, and USB may be required for adaptive triggers in select games. Availability varies by device, and adaptive triggers are not compatible with Android-based mobile devices. Check the specific game’s compatibility information and PlayStation’s PC gaming support guidance before relying on a feature or connection method.

Do you need a special controller?
You need a compatible DualSense controller and a game that implements the feature; the DualSense Edge is not required. The Edge is an optional controller with adjustable trigger settings. Those settings are a separate configuration option, not a prerequisite for a game’s adaptive-trigger effects. PlayStation lists PC controller information on its PC accessories page.
