A slow browser can be caused by one overloaded tab, an extension, the browser itself, another app competing for resources, or a wider device or network problem. Start by checking whether the slowdown affects one site, one browser, or everything on the computer. Then use the browser’s task manager and a temporary extension test to narrow it down before clearing data or resetting settings.

First, find out what is slow

Try a few different websites, then open the same pages in another browser if one is available. Also notice whether other apps on the computer feel sluggish.

  • One site is slow: The site, its content, or its service may be the issue.
  • One browser is slow: Its tabs, extensions, processes, or profile are more plausible places to investigate.
  • The whole computer is slow: Check other running apps and system resource use; the browser may not be the main cause.

These checks narrow the possibilities but do not prove the cause. Change one thing at a time and retry the same page so you can tell whether a change helped.

Check which browser process is using resources

A tab playing video, a web app, an extension, or another browser process can use substantial memory or CPU. The built-in task managers help identify what is active before you close anything.

Chrome

  1. Open More tools > Task Manager.
  2. Sort by Memory footprint or another relevant column to find resource-heavy tasks.
  3. End only a task you can safely close. Unsaved work in a tab or app may be lost.

Google’s Chrome performance guidance describes using Task Manager to find tasks consuming resources.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Press Shift+Esc to open Browser Task Manager.
  2. Sort by CPU or Memory.
  3. Look for a tab, extension, subframe, or utility process using more resources than expected. Close it only if doing so will not discard work.

See Microsoft’s instructions for diagnosing high CPU or memory usage in Edge.

Firefox

  1. Enter about:processes in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Review the processes and tabs using substantial CPU or memory.
  3. Close a tab only after checking that it has no unsaved work.

Mozilla explains this approach in its guide to Firefox using too much memory or CPU.

Test whether an extension is slowing the browser

Extensions can affect performance, but their impact varies; having an extension installed does not mean it is necessarily the cause. A 2024 empirical study by Bihui Jin, Ying Zou, and Heng Li examined 72 representative Chrome extensions across 11 categories and found that effects can depend on factors such as code complexity and how an extension is used. That study is a reason to test extensions, not evidence that all add-ons slow browsers. Read the study, Impact of Extensions on Browser Performance: An Empirical Study on Google Chrome.

  1. Temporarily turn off extensions, or use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode, and retry the same pages.
  2. If performance improves, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each change.
  3. Update or remove an extension that consistently coincides with the slowdown and is not essential.

Google says, “If you’re not using all your extensions, you can turn them off to speed up Chrome.” Mozilla documents the disable-and-reenable test in its Firefox troubleshooting guide for extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration.

Reduce tabs and other competing work

Close tabs you do not need, pause a download if appropriate, and quit other apps that are using substantial resources. Some pages run scripts that use a lot of memory or CPU, and each open tab needs memory.

If the slowdown occurs mainly with video, WebGL, canvas content, scrolling, or other graphics-heavy activity, check hardware acceleration and the graphics driver. Microsoft notes that “Software rendering of video, WebGL, and canvas content increases CPU usage.” In Edge, review edge://gpu; if features are reported as software-only, update the graphics driver and confirm graphics acceleration is enabled. See Microsoft’s Edge guidance. Mozilla also recommends checking hardware acceleration and graphics drivers when troubleshooting relevant Firefox problems in its Firefox troubleshooting guide.

Clear browsing data or reset settings only after simpler checks

Clearing cached images and files is a later option when the problem persists. Clearing all browsing data is broader: depending on the boxes you select, it can remove information useful for convenience or signing in. Choose data types deliberately and review the browser’s current prompt before confirming.

Resetting settings is a stronger step. In Edge, a settings reset preserves bookmarks, history, and saved passwords, but resets pinned tabs, the startup page, the search engine, and extensions. Review the current confirmation screen before proceeding. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance covers general recovery steps. Chrome provides a separate reset Chrome settings to default procedure; check its current description before using it.

When browser fixes do not help

If only one site remains slow, investigate that site or whether its service is having problems. If every browser and other apps are sluggish, troubleshoot the computer or network separately. If CPU or memory use remains high with extensions disabled and only a few tabs open, note the browser version and what its task manager shows, then consult the browser’s official support or a qualified technician.

Mozilla’s general Firefox slowdown article, last updated April 12, 2021, also mentions malware scanning when slowness cannot otherwise be explained. If you pursue that possibility, prefer your operating system’s built-in security tool or trusted official guidance. These browser checks do not establish a need for a paid repair product, a hardware upgrade, or a third-party “speed-up” or driver utility.

The vendor instructions above cover desktop Chrome, Firefox, and Edge; exact labels can vary by version and operating system. Current Safari-specific steps are not established here, so consult Apple’s current guidance before changing Safari settings. These sources provide troubleshooting instructions, not a controlled comparison of browser speed, so they do not establish one of these browsers as universally fastest.
