EXPLAIN shows the execution plan your database optimizer chose; it does not, by itself, prove how long a query will take or identify the cause of a slowdown. To use it well, confirm your database engine and version, inspect the plan’s row flow and operations, then compare estimates with observed execution when it is safe to run the statement.

What EXPLAIN tells you—and what it does not

EXPLAIN describes how a database plans to process a statement. The plan can show access methods, filters, joins, sorting, and the optimizer’s estimates. Those details help you form and test a diagnosis, but a plan is not a standalone performance verdict: actual time depends on the data, parameter values, cache and system conditions, and the work performed during execution.

Syntax and plan vocabulary differ by database, and output can vary between releases. PostgreSQL says EXPLAIN is not defined by the SQL standard. Identify the engine and version before interpreting a plan, and use that engine’s documentation rather than assuming the same label means the same thing everywhere.

Start with the exact query and conditions

Before comparing plans, record the complete SQL statement, relevant parameter values, database product and version, and the conditions under which it is slow. Plans depend on query structure, data distribution, statistics, and optimizer choices. PostgreSQL notes that estimates can vary because statistics are based on random samples and that costs depend on platform-specific planner settings.

Get a plan, then decide whether execution is safe

Estimated plan

Plain EXPLAIN shows the proposed plan without providing observed execution measurements. It is a useful first look when you want to understand the optimizer’s choices without deliberately running the statement for analysis.

Observed execution

PostgreSQL’s EXPLAIN ANALYZE and MySQL 8.4’s EXPLAIN ANALYZE execute the statement and report observed information alongside the plan. That makes it possible to compare actual row counts and timing with optimizer expectations, but it also means the statement runs. Do not casually use it on a production data-changing statement. Prefer an appropriate test copy or a safe transaction-and-rollback approach that accounts for your database’s behavior.

In PostgreSQL, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) adds actual row information and buffer activity. A buffer hit means a block was found in cache; a read means a block was brought into shared buffers. Timing instrumentation can add overhead. If per-node timing is not essential, TIMING OFF avoids repeated clock reads while retaining actual row counts; PostgreSQL still measures total statement runtime.

Read a PostgreSQL plan from the leaves upward

PostgreSQL presents a plan as a tree. Start at the bottom, where nodes commonly access rows, and follow the results upward through joins, filters, aggregates, sorts, and other operations. The top node represents the complete plan. PostgreSQL’s guide calls plan reading an art that takes experience, but a few distinctions make the output easier to reason about.

Costs are estimates, not milliseconds

PostgreSQL shows estimated startup and total costs, typically alongside estimated rows and row width. Costs are arbitrary planner units—not elapsed time. A parent node’s total cost includes the costs of its children, so adding parent and child costs together double-counts work. Use costs to understand the planner’s relative expectations within a plan, not as a stopwatch reading.

Rows means output from a node

A node’s estimated rows is the number it expects to emit, not necessarily the number it must inspect internally. A scan can visit many rows and then have a filter discard most of them. With an analyzed plan, compare estimated and actual rows at important nodes and follow where row counts first diverge. A mismatch is a reason to investigate—for example, statistics may not represent the data well, or a parameter may produce a different distribution—not proof of a single cause.

Assess scans and filters in context

A sequential scan is not automatically a mistake. PostgreSQL may find it cheaper to read a table sequentially than to fetch many rows one by one through an index. An index-assisted path is more likely to help when the query needs a small subset. Consider how selective the predicate is and how many rows flow out of the node.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check where filtering happens. An index condition can limit which entries are visited, while a later filter may discard rows after the access method has found them. Neither label alone establishes that the plan is poor; compare the estimated and observed row flow and the work required to produce it.

SQLite uses different scan labels

SQLite’s EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN uses SCAN and SEARCH records. SCAN can describe a full-table scan or a walk through all records in an index-defined order. SEARCH indicates that only a subset of rows is visited. SQLite can also show index use, whether an index is covering, and which WHERE terms are used for indexing. These meanings belong to SQLite; do not read them as PostgreSQL or MySQL plan labels.

Follow row flow through joins and sorting

When reviewing joins, inspect the estimated and actual rows entering each operation and the rows it produces. A conspicuous operation may be expensive because an earlier node produced far more rows than expected. Follow the flow through the tree before blaming the most visually prominent node. PostgreSQL supports multiple join algorithms and access methods, so the query and data determine which plan is appropriate.

SQLite implements joins as nested scans and emits a SCAN or SEARCH entry for each nested loop; the entry order indicates nesting order. Its plan may also report USE TEMP B-TREE FOR ORDER BY, GROUP BY, or DISTINCT, indicating temporary sorting or grouping work. An index can help in some cases, but the marker alone is not a reason to add one: verify the effect against the query and workload.

Choose the next experiment from the evidence

Prioritize a plan region when observed work is substantial and there is a meaningful estimate-versus-actual mismatch, unexpectedly broad row flow, repeated inner work, or avoidable sorting or data reads. Then investigate the parts that can explain that evidence:

  • Check whether the relevant schema, indexes, and query predicates match the intended access pattern.
  • Review statistics and whether they represent the data involved in the slow case.
  • Compare the parameter values and conditions used for the slow execution with those used to capture the plan.
  • Make one evidence-based change at a time, then compare executions under comparable conditions.

These are diagnostic leads, not guaranteed fixes. A scan, join type, or temporary sort is not universally slow; judge it by the observed work and what the query needs to return.

Why engine and version matter

Database and documentation version What to expect Important caution
PostgreSQL 18 A node tree with estimated startup and total costs, rows, and width; ANALYZE adds observed runtime and row data, while BUFFERS shows block activity. Costs are planner units, not elapsed time. Execution and instrumentation can affect measurements.
MySQL 8.4 EXPLAIN describes how MySQL would process a statement, including join information and order. EXPLAIN ANALYZE runs the statement and provides iterator timing information for comparison with optimizer expectations. Because the analyzed form runs the statement, take care with data-changing queries.
SQLite EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN gives a high-level description using SCAN/SEARCH records, index details, nested-loop order, and temporary B-tree markers. The output is intended for interactive troubleshooting; its details can change between releases, so do not build durable tooling around a fixed text layout.

For engine-specific details, see the PostgreSQL 18 guide to using EXPLAIN and its EXPLAIN command reference, the MySQL 8.4 guide to execution plans and EXPLAIN statement reference, and SQLite’s EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN and EXPLAIN documentation.
