Windows 11 23H2 is a feature update built on the same servicing foundation as 22H2. It adds features such as Copilot in Windows, Dev Drive, Dev Home, and passkey-related options, but many changes arrived in monthly updates during the 22H2 period. For eligible, recently updated 22H2 PCs, Microsoft delivers the move to 23H2 through a small enablement package rather than a full replacement installation.
Support is now the most important practical distinction: as of October 5, 2026, Home and Pro editions of both versions are out of updates. Enterprise and Education have different lifecycle dates, so check the exact edition before making a servicing decision.
What’s the difference between Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2?
23H2 is an annual feature update to 22H2, not a completely separate Windows platform. Microsoft describes 23H2 as including features and fixes already delivered in previous cumulative updates to Windows 11 22H2. The main differences are the feature set enabled by 23H2, the device’s monthly-update state, and edition-specific support status.
Microsoft identifies Windows 11 23H2 as OS build 22631. A machine running 22H2 may already have some features associated with 23H2 if it received the relevant updates. See Microsoft’s 23H2 feature documentation and Windows 11 release information.

What features came with the 22H2-to-23H2 period?
Microsoft’s list of notable changes delivered since 22H2 includes these additions and improvements. Their precise availability on an individual PC depends on its updates, rollout status, edition, and management policies.
- Copilot in Windows: desktop-based generative AI assistance.
- Developer tools: Dev Drive, a storage volume designed for key developer workloads, and Dev Home, a central app for starting, testing, and deploying Windows apps.
- Passkey and sign-in options: passkey management in Settings and passwordless or web sign-in options for Microsoft Entra-joined devices.
- Education and accessibility: education themes, multi-app kiosk configuration, education-focused federated sign-in, expanded braille-display compatibility, and Narrator improvements.
- Windows interface and management: File Explorer tabs, taskbar overflow, suggested actions for copied text, Task Manager enhancements, taskbar customization updates, and Windows Hello for Business authentication changes in supported configurations.
These are changes delivered across the 22H2-to-23H2 period, not necessarily features that first appeared on the day a PC upgraded to 23H2. Microsoft’s feature documentation notes that features may first arrive in optional nonsecurity preview updates, roll out gradually, and later be included in monthly security updates. Its Windows client update-cycle guidance explains how those updates relate to annual feature releases.

Is Windows 11 23H2 just an enablement package?
No. 23H2 is a Windows feature update; the enablement package is the upgrade mechanism Microsoft uses for eligible, recently updated 22H2 devices. Most of the files needed for the update are already present after recent monthly security updates. The package activates the 23H2 features and moves the device to build 22631.
This distinction explains why the update can be much smaller and faster than a full operating-system installation. Microsoft documents the enablement-package route in its 23H2 IT-pro documentation and release information. The cited route is a software update; it does not require a generic USB drive, paid utility, or replacement PC component.

Why might 22H2 already have some 23H2 features?
Microsoft’s Windows servicing model can deliver new features through optional preview and monthly cumulative updates rather than waiting for an annual feature update. That means two PCs labeled 22H2 may not have identical feature sets if their update histories differ.
On managed devices, administrators may also use temporary enterprise feature control to keep selected features delivered through cumulative updates turned off until the next annual feature update or until enabled by policy. As a result, version number alone may not tell an employee whether a feature is available or active. Microsoft describes this behavior in its update-cycle guidance.

Is Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2 still supported?
It depends on the Windows edition. Microsoft lifecycle pages show dates in Pacific Time; its separate supported-versions snapshot, updated September 29, 2026, lists 23H2 as “End of updates” for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations. The snapshot lists November 10, 2026 for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session. Microsoft’s lifecycle page gives November 11, 2026 for 23H2 Enterprise and Education, a one-day discrepancy. Check Microsoft’s current supported-versions page for the exact edition and latest status.

Microsoft’s current edition-by-edition status is available in its supported versions of Windows client reference. Home and Pro users should not treat 23H2 as a currently supported destination: both 22H2 and 23H2 have passed their listed end-of-updates dates. Check Windows Update and Microsoft’s current supported-version guidance for an available supported release. Enterprise and Education administrators should confirm the organization’s edition, update controls, and servicing target.

Which version should you choose?
For a current consumer decision, neither 22H2 nor 23H2 Home/Pro is a supported target as of October 5, 2026. The useful question is which supported Windows release Windows Update offers for your device, not whether to install one of these two older versions.
For organizations still assessing these releases, compare the installed monthly updates and policy settings as well as the version label. The 23H2 enablement package is the documented transition for eligible, recently updated 22H2 devices; however, the edition’s lifecycle and the organization’s current servicing plan determine whether that transition is appropriate.
