RAM speed can improve performance when a computer’s workload is limited by memory bandwidth, but a higher number on a kit does not guarantee a faster PC. Compatibility, capacity, timings, processor and motherboard support, and the programs you run all matter. Check those factors before paying extra for a faster-rated kit.
What RAM speed means
DDR memory ratings such as DDR5-5600 are data rates, commonly stated in megatransfers per second (MT/s). People often call them “MHz,” but MHz measures clock frequency; MT/s describes the number of data transfers per second. The rating is useful for comparing memory data rates, but it does not by itself predict how much faster an application will run.
Bandwidth describes how much data memory can move over time. A higher data rate can increase potential bandwidth, which can help when a workload is memory-intensive. Application performance does not automatically increase by the same percentage: other parts of the system and the workload itself can limit the result.
When RAM speed matters
Speed is most likely to matter when a workload makes substantial use of memory bandwidth. That can include some games, content-creation software, engineering programs, and workstation tasks. The outcome depends on the specific processor, graphics card, memory configuration, application or game, and settings, so there is no reliable universal percentage improvement.

Crucial says software optimization and workload characteristics affect whether DDR5’s architecture delivers benefits. Its 2025 comparison lists system bandwidth figures of 69.2 GB/s for DDR5-5600 CL46 and 33.6 GB/s for DDR4-3200 CL22. Those are Crucial’s figures for its comparison, not a guarantee of the bandwidth or application performance every PC will achieve. See Crucial’s DDR4 and DDR5 comparison.
How to compare data rate and latency
Do not compare memory kits by data rate alone if latency matters to your decision. CAS latency (CL) is a timing expressed as a number of clock cycles. The duration of each cycle depends on the data rate, so a higher CL number does not, by itself, prove that a kit has greater elapsed latency. Compare the data rate and timings together; for a more complete assessment, consider the full timing set and how the platform handles the memory.

Crucial’s 2025 comparison gives example system-latency figures of 92.8 ns for DDR5-4800 CL40 and 90.0 ns for DDR4-3200 CL22. These are manufacturer-provided figures for that comparison, not universal measurements for all DDR5 and DDR4 systems. Crucial also states that standard JEDEC memory’s true latency has historically been 13–16 ns and system latency 90–100 ns; those broad manufacturer statements should not be treated as a promise about an individual PC. Read the manufacturer’s explanation of latency.
Does DDR5 truly provide any benefits?
DDR5 can offer greater potential bandwidth than DDR4, but whether that translates into a benefit depends on the workload and the rest of the computer. A bandwidth-sensitive task may gain more than one limited by the processor, graphics card, storage, or software behavior. Crucial reproduces a positive opinion about DDR5 in the context of newer games, but an opinion about particular games is not proof of a general gaming uplift. Judge a performance claim using independent benchmarks for the exact hardware, game or application, capacity, and settings you care about.

Is DDR5’s latency worse than DDR4?
CL values alone cannot answer this: CL counts cycles, and the length of a cycle changes with data rate. System latency also involves more than the CL rating. Crucial’s example above shows why a comparison needs context: its stated system-latency figure for DDR5-4800 CL40 is close to, but higher than, its figure for DDR4-3200 CL22. That manufacturer example does not establish a universal result for every module or platform.
Check compatibility before buying
DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable. The processor and motherboard determine which memory generation and supported rates a system can use. A kit’s advertised profile speed may not be available on every combination of processor, motherboard, number of modules, and firmware; a higher-rated kit can run at a lower supported rate.

Before choosing a kit, check the exact computer or motherboard documentation and verify:
- Generation and form factor: Match DDR4 or DDR5 as required. Desktops commonly use UDIMMs; laptops require the correct SO-DIMM type.
- Capacity and module count: Confirm the system’s capacity limits and supported configurations. If insufficient capacity is causing memory pressure, adding compatible capacity may matter more than choosing a higher data rate.
- Supported speed and profile: Check what the processor and motherboard support, and whether the advertised memory profile works with your configuration.
- Timings and price: Compare data rate, CL and other timings, then weigh any likely workload benefit against the cost.
How to choose a RAM speed for your PC
- Identify your system: Find the exact computer model or motherboard and processor, then consult their documentation for DDR generation, form factor, capacity limits, and supported speeds.
- Check whether memory is the constraint: Consider whether your usual games or applications are likely to be bandwidth-sensitive, or whether low capacity is creating memory pressure. Do not assume speed is the bottleneck.
- Compare compatible kits: Check total capacity and module count alongside data rate and timings. Confirm that the system can use the rated profile rather than assuming the advertised number will apply.
- Pay for a faster kit only when it fits the use case: Look for independent results matching your hardware and workload if you need to estimate performance gains. Without that close comparison, a top speed rating is not a reliable promise of a noticeable improvement.
What to take away
RAM speed matters when memory bandwidth constrains a workload, but it is only one part of performance. Match the memory to the platform first, make sure capacity is adequate, and compare data rate with timings rather than treating either number as a complete measure. There is no single best speed tier for every computer or user.
