It uses the Remote Framebuffer (RFB) protocol: the computer being accessed sends screen updates to a viewer, and the viewer sends back keyboard, mouse, or touch input.
What is VNC?
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It lets a person interact with a computer’s graphical interface from another endpoint, rather than sitting at that computer. The name refers to the remote-access system; RFB, short for Remote Framebuffer, is the protocol used by VNC.
The IETF’s RFC 6143 describes RFB as a protocol for remote access to graphical user interfaces. It is an Informational RFC published in March 2011, not an Internet Standards Track specification. Read RFC 6143.
How does VNC work?
A VNC connection has two roles. The server runs on the computer whose desktop is being accessed, and the viewer (also called the client) runs at the controlling endpoint. The server sends changes to the displayed image; the viewer sends user input back to the server to apply.

- The server captures the remote computer’s desktop and sends screen updates to the viewer.
- The viewer displays those updates so the remote desktop can be seen.
- The viewer sends keyboard, mouse, or touch actions to the server, which applies them on the remote computer.

What does “framebuffer” mean in RFB?
A framebuffer is the image data representing what is displayed on a screen. RFB works at this display level rather than being tied to a particular application or windowing system. That design helps it work across different environments. RFC 6143 names X11, Windows, and Macintosh as examples, and the foundational VNC paper also describes applicability across operating systems and applications. What VNC does—and does not—guarantee about security
RFB compatibility alone does not establish how a particular VNC connection is encrypted, how users authenticate, how software updates are handled, or whether a deployment is safe to expose to a network. Those protections depend on the specific server, viewer, and configuration.
For example, RealVNC documents end-to-end encryption for VNC Connect and recommends product-specific safeguards including account two-step verification and limiting access to trusted invitees. Those claims apply to RealVNC’s product, not to every implementation of VNC. Consult the vendor’s VNC Connect security and privacy information and maximum-security setup guidance when evaluating that product.
